Class A game postponed because of nearby standoff

VISALIA, Calif. (AP) [--] A California League game between Modesto and Visalia was postponed Thursday night when a sheriff's deputy was stabbed during a nearby eviction that prompted a standoff.

Tulare County Sheriff Sgt. John Gray was serving an eviction when he was attacked by suspect Melvin Nicks and stabbed once in the upper chest.

Gray shot Nicks, who retreated into the home, and a standoff ensued.

The home was less than a block from the stadium that serves as the home of the Visalia Oaks. The game was postponed during the standoff, as police and sheriff's deputies surrounded the home.

Eventually Nicks left the residence and was arrested and taken to a hospital in critical condition. The sheriff's sergeant was treated and released.

No makeup date was announced.

These minor league promotions are really getting out of hand.

About 18 years ago, I remember a comedy routine about all sorts of different minor league promotions: "Mole Night: Any fan who can tunnell into the ballpark will get in for half price."
"Philosophy Night: Any fan who can prove his non-existence to an usher will get in for half price"
And of course: "Rambo Night:Any fan who can hold a hunting knife to an usher's throat will get in for half price."

Anybody ever heard that before?

I just remember one -- a parody of an over-the-top homer broadcaster -- reminding listeners that Tuesday nigh was Hand Gun and Hard Liquor Night.

Your comedy routine sucked! :D

Seriously, never heard it. But the REAL promotions are more warped than anything anyone could actually make up.

Remember, fans, Tuesday is Die Hard Night. Free admission for anyone who was actually alive the last time the Indians won the pennant.

My favorite promotions by the Arkansas Travelers are clunker car night -- many cars, some running, some not -- are given away; and midget wrestling, which occurs several times a season.
