Mike DeCourcy retires

A late-night radio guy I used to listen to driving home from work had DeCourcy on frequently. I thought he was kinda knowledgeable but I never totally bought in. One night just before the NCAA Tournament was starting, the host asked him to point out a team that could surprise and make some noise in the event. He comes back with two -- Xavier and Cincinnati. DeCourcy was working in Cincinnati at the time.

So, here's my DeCourcy story. The Cincinnati Post brought him in for an interview (paid for it, etc.) and then he went and got an interview with the Enquirer while there and took that job. Then while working, he said he wasn't used to having competition and quickly left for TSN. Take that for what you will, I guess, but I was never a fan due to that (which I was told from people with authority on the subject).

Never met the guy (and don't remember reading him). And no disrespect intended, but the intro to that farewell piece was, for some reason I can't explain, really different from most of the "I'm heading out" pieces that I read.

I didn't go beyond the intro.
Too bad, Dog8. Mike has been the top college hoops guy for over 30 years (better than Wetzel and anyone else). The reason he didn't write a "I'm heading out" piece was because he wanted to revisit some of the best games he ever covered, and in turn, presented fans with the opportunity to reflect back, as well. I would have liked to see him talk a bit more about what's on the horizon for him.

I met Mike only twice as our paths crossed over the years but he was a pro's pro. He sometimes came across a bit rough, but that's because he was so focused on what he was doing. I hope he has a great retirement, but also that he still keeps on writing on occasion.

I used to work with Mike, and work his copy, too.
A pro's pro all the way, on deadline and everywhere else.

Other old-timers can correct me, but I think many years ago he wrote a piece bemoaning cursing that became a bit here with a thread that might have been the largest collections of f-bombs on the board.
