This was on Romenesko today, but I thought I’d post it because there’s a Pulitzer thread, too. Atlantic Media Co. has announced the winner of the Michael Kelly Award. It went to C.J. Chivers for his piece in Esquire about the Beslan school siege. An incredible story. If you haven’t read it, you need to. You can find it here: http://www.esquire.com/features/ESQ0606BESLAN_140.

They also have links to pdfs and Web versions of past nominees and winners. It’s worth a look. It’s quite a collection of interesting stories from the past four years. There’s a really good New Yorker story about the Aryan Brotherhood from a few years ago, and Tom Junod’s “Falling Man” story from Esquire is there, too.

That was an incredible story. I remember being unable to put down the magazine.

Absolutely. One of the best things I've read in the last five years.

Chivers is a powerful, and relatively new, voice in national nonfiction. A terrific reporter, and even the Times can't bleed the color out of his writing. I'm a great admirer of his work.

Something you may not know... Chivers also wrote for Field & Stream in 2006.

He also wrote for the Block Island Times. He's a helluva fisherman.
