Matt Forte: HOF?

Announced his retirement yesterday. I imagine playing for bad teams and never leading the league in rushing will work against him. But:

• Five 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
• 14,468 combined yards from scrimmage top in the NFL over his 10-year career.
• 102 receptions in 2014 a record for running backs.
• 28th all-time yards from scrimmage. Nearly everyone ahead of him is in Canton or on the way.

He should get serious consideration, but football fans and writers are pretty stupid when it comes to multipurpose backs. Only three have ever put up 1,400 total yards their first seven seasons. Forte is one of them.

I know, right? In baseball, we have long passed the point where we believe batting average defines a hitter.

Basically unrecruited out of high school, played at Tulane (my alma mater) because his Dad did. Solid citizen and seldom-seen weapon on offense whose best years went to waste in Chicago.

None of those halfbacks is going to the Hall of Fame.

Forte was very good, but never that transcendent talent who was in the MVP discussion. Didn’t help that his teams were never consistent title contenders. I can’t see him getting much consideration at all. He’d have to be in line behind Craig, Watters, Marshawn and Chuck Foreman.

The only thing that stands out in his profile is the one season he caught 102 passes. My sense is a lot of that was garbage time for a bad team that was getting blown out regularly. Not positive about that, but in any case, that season is an extreme outlier and his next best is an unremarkable 74 catches.

And 1,000-yard seasons are really no gauge at all of a potential Hall of Famer.

I'll be surprised if this one is ever even close.

I don't think he'll get close to the Hall, but playing 10 years at running back and leading the league in total yards in that span is pretty ****ing impressive.

I'm not sure I could have picked Matt Forte out of a lineup if you had a gun to my head. I don't get involved in HOF discussions, but I am not much for the 'compiler' guys. Led the league in nothing. No signature playoff moments. No signature regular season moments, at least that I can remember. Just a 'guy' to me. We all have different criteria for HOF, that's why I stay out of those threads. But part of my criteria is there isn't one ****ing person in America going to Canton to see Matt Forte's bust who isn't from a) Chicago or b) his hometown. For a running back, the arguably second most glamour position in the game, that hurts the cause.

Not being able to recognize non-QBs is kind of how the NFL operates. It's not a star-making league like the NBA. Plus, the helmets. I don't think that particular factor should work against him.
