(I originally posted this on the "Anything Goes" thread, but I was encouraged to post it here too.)

My name is Patrick Creaven and I'm the sports editor at the Daily Forty-Niner, the campus newspaper at Long Beach State. I know this is a shot in the dark, but I am trying to find a sports journalism job (I'm graduating in six weeks) and this seems like the best place to communicate with as many people as possible in the profession. I feel uncomfortable hyping myself up, but I guess that's how people get jobs so here it goes.

I have been involved in sports journalism since I was 17 years old, when I worked for The Vallejo Times-Herald (which is in the Bay Area), where I covered high school sports. I continued to cover high school sports when I went to college at CSULB, interning and freelancing for the Daily Breeze in Torrance. Then, in my last year here at CSULB, I became sports editor of the Daily Forty-Niner. I took over a poorly run section and through leadership, hard work and new ideas never seen before in the paper, I turned it into possibly the best section the Daily Forty-Niner has to offer.

Here is a link to all the stories I have written for the paper this school year: http://www.daily49er.com/user/index.cfm?event=displayAuthorProfile&prefix=pcreaven

Overall, I think I could be a huge asset for any media organization, large or small. I have covered everything from high school girls water polo to men's college basketball to Major League Soccer. I have a passion for journalism and I love to report and write. People who know me can tell you about my work ethic and my desire to be the best journalist I can possibly be.

I would be happy to send a resume to anyone that might be interested in giving me a chance.

Sincerely,
Patrick Creaven

And here's the pitch to Albert Pujols...

It's a hanging curveball...

Yeah, we really don't have the New York Times waiting in a thread here.

So essentially, what we're saying is that you managed to do just about everything you could possibly do wrong.

And also, fetch me a beer.

Your membership designation means you should fetch some beers yourself. Make mine a Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat, please.

Ah yes...the classic "don't have enough posts so call you a newbie" internet hierarchy. Thought that died out with Halo.

Feb. 20, 2007 (less than two months ago): I am a recent college graduate and am really curious about how to break into the field. I majored in English with a concentration in journalism. I have sent out resumes and have not had many responses. Are there any tips or helpful insights you all could share with me?

I have been networking very hard from the moment I was in college to the moment I graduated. My clip file is extensive with the writing that I did for four years with my award winning school newspaper. I don't mind relocating, it is first finding that job with to do it. I put more work than many people on my staff in college.

I wish I could have interned during my collegiate years. One thing that I see all of you are saying is that it is a hard job to get into and you won't get paid much getting in. It's like the old adage, would you prefer a job that you hate and get paid well or a job that you love but don't get much at all?

And now you call Patrick 'kid' and he is expected to fetch you beers? It must have been a productive month and a half for you, my friend.

No. . . . .

Your actual title is "Newbie." Look at your posts, above the star and below your name.

Cut (Creaven) a break ... believe it or not, they were nicer to him on the anything goes thread ...

Creaven, have you been to journalismjobs.com and E&P, etc? This board is primarily for people already in the business but you're very welcome here because there's a lot of good people and good info ... but as far as getting a job I wish you luck, it's not really what happens here ...

I was asking about how to break into the field, not asking flat out for a job. All of those quotes from me that you put on there were from questions people posed in the thread that I created.

I guess the whole joke aspect of him fetching me a beer was not taken well. Oh jeez. Maybe I should put it in blue font next time.
