Fighter jets escorted a diverted London-to-Washington, D.C., flight to Boston's Logan airport Wednesday after a distraught passenger pulled out a screw driver, matches, Vaseline and a note referencing al-Qaida, an airport spokesman said. Watch WHAS11 News at noon for more information.

I'm taking two London-US flights in Sept (one to philly, one to SF)...i'm really not looking forward to either one. In fact, if it weren't for the weddings, etc, that we're going to next month, i would have cancelled it--not because i'm afraid of terrorism, but because i really don't want to deal with the probable delays, stressed/scared fellow travellers mixing emotions and booze, etc......

You've probably already bought your tickets, but is it possible for you to take the Eurostar and fly out of Paris or Brussels instead? Yes, there's the hassle of getting to those places, but there are fewer restrictions.

You've probably already bought your tickets, but is it possible for you to take the Eurostar and fly out of Paris or Brussels instead?  Yes, there's the hassle of getting to those places, but there are fewer restrictions.

that's a pretty good idea--not sure how possible it is, but i'm going to definitely look into it....

The federal security official said there was no indication of terrorism and denied reports that the woman had a screw driver, matches and a note referring to al-Qaeda.

A couple of days ago I read a quote in the WSJ from AG Gonzales that said basically, it's not safe to fly.

I flew a couple of days before the plot was uncovered.  As I approached security, about 100 passengers in line started gagging and coughing and putting things over their mouths.  I had to go into reporter mode to find out from the TSAs what the hell was going on.  

One said, "I think workers are up in the ceiling.  It could be asbestos."
Next one said, "I have no idea."
Third one said, "I couldn't even begin to tell you."  My answer to that was that I have a medical condition, and I HAD TO KNOW why people were gagging and coughing.  He takes me aside and whispers that somebody brought pepper spray to the airport.  A TSA was looking at it and inadvertently set it off.

These are the people we have hired to sniff out the bombs.

I think I read today that only 5% of the cargo we put on passenger planes is screened.

Upshot:  I'm not flying until they improve things.

On a bright note, I also read this morning that two companies are developing "CT Scans"-- same thing you'd get at the hospital-- for use in airports.
