All ... this will hit the APSE board sometime soon. Needless to say, we need to move QUICK!

DW

The Tuscaloosa News, a 38,000-circulation New York Times-owned newspaper, has an immediate opening for a lead designer on our eight-person sports staff. We want someone who is creative, organized and team-oriented to be our primary designer for the daily Sports section and other efforts, such as our 'GameDay` preview sections when the University of Alabama plays home football games.

The right person for this job can make pages pop on deadline, has a sharp news sense and solid copy editing skills, and can collaborate with our award-winning writers and photographers to delight our savvy, sports-hungry readers. Sports is central to our franchise, and we are committed to building a nationally-recognized team in our newsroom.

We cover the University of Alabama, SEC athletics, three area college programs, 40-plus high schools, NASCAR twice yearly at Talladega, and a wide variety of local and regional events. We use a Quark-based design platform. Adobe Photoshop skills are also preferred, but not mandatory.

Tuscaloosa is located in a beautiful spot in West Central Alabama, which is thriving thanks in part to Mercedes' only U.S. plant in the county. We're less than an hour from Birmingham, two hours to Memphis, three to Atlanta/New Orleans/the beach.

In short, if you have the drive to join one of the most talented sports staffs in the Southeast, send a resume and five of your best work samples to David Wasson, Executive Sports Editor, P.O. Box 20587, Tuscaloosa, Ala., 35401, or e-mail to [email protected]. The Tuscaloosa News is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes diversity in applicants.

Again, this is an immediate opening! Please, no phone calls.

The T-News is superb. You'll have a pretty loaded toolbox design-wise, because it looks sharp. David Wasson, Esq., is a gentleman and scholar (though admittedly liberal with the Rules of Golf, which I hold so precious). Good lines to draw there, too, considering what they cover and the intensity with which they work.

A position held at one time by Chris Olds, who went from Tuscaloosa to San Antonio and then to Orlando. So it can be done.

Now that he is in Florida, is he still writing the baseball card column?

florence is a better NYT gig -- it's really two hours from memphis, b'ham and nashville.

The SE at Florence fudges at cards, the SE in Tuscaloosa kicks the ball back into the fairway... you say to-MAH-to, I say TOE-may-to...

I'd be stunned if he didn't do some of those collectibles pages there, too, but I haven't checked his online portfolio lately.

Anyone who thinks Florence is a better gig, please let me know what you're on so I can get some. ... and if you don't believe me let me know and I'll start listing some of the awards the T-News sports department has won the last couple of years. Pretty darn impressive.

How deep into the $30K range would this job get? Just asking if the word "Lead" really means anything

Would a paper with a circulation under 40k really pay more than mid-30s for this position?

Those NY Times regional papers pay fairly well, from what I've heard. I know they have really good benefits. Tuscaloosa is nice. They're a wee bit fanatical about Bear Bryant.
