Laker great has leukemia

Damn. Best of luck to Kareem. He's really opened up the last few years, and that's been fun to see. Seems like a good dude -- and he must be, after dragging Walton and Lanier up the court for so long. (obligatory reference.)

And you know he never tried, except during the playoffs. :)

On a more serious note, prayers go out to Kareem. Fight the good fight.

Just curious: Why "Laker great"?
Is he no longer big enough to be known simply as "Kareem"?
All the best to the big fella.

I thought it was going to be about Michael Cooper, or Orlando Woolridge or something, to be honest.

Maybe he didn't want people to think it was the former UCLA/Dolphins running back.

Shirley, you can't be serious.

Best wishes to someone who deserves far more than Laker great in the thread title.

Possibly the second-greatest NBA player of all time.

I hope he gets through this.

It's a good thing he changed his name, as I don't know if the NY Post could have helped itself from a "Lew-kemia" headline.

Don't you know that anything with Lakers in the headline gets more

I was wondering that, too.

Yeah, I'm in line too.
So you lazy ****ers would have click on the link to see who!

This.

Besides, don't you know that anything with Lakers in the headline gets exponentially more readers/hits than almost anything else in L.A. sports sections/on sports Web sites?

That said, take care, Kareem.

One of the first sports books I really read was one of his auto-bios (I think he's done three), "Giant Steps." It really explained much of his distant attitude, and made me a Laker fan for life -- even through the post-Magic/pre-Kobe years and even though I can't stand the NBA now.

A lot of folks took advantage of him, got racial, eschewed him when he converted to Islam, never tried to understand him -- and each time, he retreated further and further back into himself. Reading that, it was very easy to understand. It's been good to see him opening up again over the last 10-15 years.

I really hope he beats this and hangs around for a long, long time.

Ail-cindor?

And double what was said earlier about "Giant Steps." Get well, Roger Murdock.

Kareem-ia?
