The BNews piece on community college corruption has been fascinating... When they say Southern politicians are corrupt, this is exhibit A -- state legislators and family members working (a very loose term in a lot of cases) for the state's two-year system. One case had a grandmother getting a basketball scholarship, no accountability of funds...head of the system resigned, his temp replacement resigned ...

And I seemed to be missing that Albom name in criticism...

Let me be the first to say the Lexington Herald-Leader got hosed in the breaking news category. Not only were they snubbed, but the Courier-Journal is a finalist for the ComAir crash coverage. Both did an excellent job covering the story, but the Herald-Leader took it to a higher level than the C-J. Special Sections, stories on each victim followed the next day coverage. Anyone else agree?

The Jonathan Gold nomination for LA Weekly is very interesting. Not sure how often that happens for the alternative press.

He writes a lot of interesting things, including reviews of obscure ethnic restaurants and things like that.

Sadly, the Pulitzers remain, for the most part, the big-time papers' version of the state press association awards ... it's hard to break into that little club.

If Hartford doesn't win for the Mentally Ill Soldiers, I'd be shocked.
It will make you want to cry and punch something at the same time.
Interesting to note, the two LA Timesers (SP?) who are nominated, weren't submitted by their paper. The LAT sent in the max of three, and they weren't on the list. The other two nominated themselves and paid the entry fee.
