I can't imagine they are making much money, though. When we saved recyclables, we never seemed to get back the 5 cents per container we paid upon purchase.

The best rate of return I ever got was from a pop machine in Ohio that had Michigan 10 cent markings on them. I'd ask my friends for their empties. I lived about eight miles from the Michigan border, so over time I'd collect enough to make it worth my while to go up there and cash them in.

I'm pretty sure I just admitted to a misdemeanor crime, but...statute of limitations!

It used to be that I could go to a self-service machine, feed it my bottles and cans and get a voucher I could redeem inside the nearby supermarket. Now I must go to a kiosk, separate my recyclables and wait for a clerk to collect some personal information and write me a voucher. It's just not worth it any more.

Around here, I don't know about other places, but they have "Pibb Xtra" now. The label has "cinnamon cherry soda" on the label in small print. I don't taste the cinnamon, though. If you go to a store that has a fountain, the label will read "Mr Pibb" sometimes and "Pibb Xtra" others and I'm not 100-percent certain if the two are the same or different.

The proper pecking order is
Real sugar Dr Pepper>Dr Pepper>Mr Pibb>The Fizzicist (Kroger's cane sugar knockoff, which I argue should be called "The Fizzician")>Dr. Thunder (Walmart)>Pibb Xtra

That anti-straw movement? It's all based on one 9-year-old's suspect statistic

Not that I would know from personal experience, but that’s definitely a no-no on the British Columbia/Alberta border. Folks picking up friends from the Calgary airport may swing by Costco and save a few hundred on taxes while stocking their liquor cabinet. Those folks are then wise to drive the speed limit all the way home. Again, hypothetically.

In Virginia, there’s a line item for money spent out of state when you file your taxes.

Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever even seen a paper straw but I've heard they kinda suck (no pun intended). The reusable metal ones might have their own issues in terms of cleanliness. So, yes, plastic is the way to go.

A restaurant I frequent switched to paper straws. I couldn’t stand them, but I didn’t complain. Thankfully, they switched back within a month.

You pay the recycle fee at the cash register. It's refunded when you recycle. It is stupid liberal socialism.

If you live in a state that doesn't have the fee and cross state lines to get paid, you are stealing from the recycle state's taxpayers. They are not paying market rate for aluminum.

It's not the same as stealing copper wire and getting market price.

I am old enough to remember--not using the new catch phrase, I really am --when there was s lot of cans and bottles along the side of the road. Iirc it may be one of the original reasons my state adopted the bottle bill. People are not responsible and I don't want to have to look at their ****ing trash. Looking forward to more and more states doing it. Also expanding the types of containers. When it started there were not as many single serve containers being sold. They need to include all of those that have come along since the programs started.

True, but even if its half, they are a problem, like most of our trash. We do need answers to this trash issue. We make lots of it.
