The real stupidity of what Lehrer did was this: Bob Dylan is one of the most analyzed people you will ever find. He is reclusive (at least in terms of interviews) and there are people who hang on his every word. If you read this interview with the author, it seems pretty clear that the author was a huge Dylan fan who simply wanted to know where the quotes came from. Not in a "I'm gonna get you" kind of a way, but in a "I'm a Dylan obsessive and I never heard this before. What's your source?" kind of way. And it snowballed from there.

This was interesting too. This month Minnesota Monthly ran a feature on 3M. Included this segment:

And, I guess there's no good answer for where you got made up quotes, but to say you viewed unedited documentary footage is so easy to prove false.
