Job interview expenses

Thanks to everyone for the input.

At least I feel it's not inappropriate to ask for something in the way of hotel, mileage, etc. The immediate supervisor seems really cool; have no idea what the higher ups are like. So, I'll ask and hope for the best.

Over the years, I've learned (out of necessity) how to travel inexpensively. But anything I don't have to shell out for is a big plus.

Will they pony up for gas and a hotel? I had an interview at a small bureau of a small daily, and I got mileage and a decent motel.

Interviewed twice at a magazine and once at a newspaper over about a years span and had my hotel, airfare and food paid or offered to be paid (I didn't fly to all of them) each time as a reimbursement. Pretty much like everyone said, if they're serious enough to bring you in for an interview, they shouldn't have a problem covering at least part of the expenses.

I paid my way to interview for my current gig. It's 1,200 miles away from my last gig, so I had to book a flight, hotel, car, etc., but it was well worth it. I hope at some point, when I do interview for my next job, they'll pay for expenses. We'll see though.

Got a call Monday night from the guy. Arranged to drive up Wednesday and interview on Thursday, then drive back. Long days, but worth it.

Got an email on Tuesday saying the publisher is "reevaluating" the position and nothing would proceed for at least a month, possibly more.

Felt like a golfer who hasn't had a birdie all round and gets to the 18th hole, hits it within 10 feet, only to watch an albatross swoop down and pluck up the ball. :(

P.S.: Shilling is what spam bots and Malcolm Gladwell do. Schilling is a former Austrian unit of currency or a bloviate ass clown with bloody socks.

Except Hanover, Pa., which expected candidates to come in on their own dime. The paper might have picked up the $50 tab for the local motel.

Stop before last was so remote, they did a phone interview. They made their initial contact as I was undressing after a workout (dress for success?). They did kick in $500 cash in moving expenses, though.
