Vatican City is its own country.

I've long believed that Vatican City could field a very competitive Olympic team. Basically anyone who is Catholic from any country could represent Vatican City in the games. How often do you see stories about somebody winning a medal because the person who made the team in front of them couldn't make it due to injury or someother reason. The Vatican could scoop up all the Catholic almost-made-the-team athletes and field a competitive team. Heck - imagine the recruiting drive they could do just at Jesuit colleges in the US.

At the very least the Vatican would win more medals than Ireland.

My understanding is that the only "citizens" of Vatican City are the people who work int he Vatican, and that you lose your citizenship if and when you leave your job.
