I seem to recall that we have a lot of Publix fans here.

While this is only applies to Florida so far, will this change your feelings about the store?

Shoppers are split after supermarket chain Publix announced it will now allow customers to openly carry firearms inside its Florida stores.

The decision comes about two weeks after an appeals court ruling overturned the state's ban on open carry.

Under the law, businesses and private property owners can choose whether to allow or ban open carry on their premises.

They say it's "where shopping is a pleasure," but now, customers may see fellow shoppers walking the aisles with a pistol on their hip at their neighborhood Publix.

A few folks will get their tighty whities in a knot about it and rant online.

I've been going into Publix stores for more than 20 years in Florida and the Southeast. I don't remember a single time seeing anyone openly carrying. TBH, I don't remember seeing anyone in any grocery store openly carrying, other than a law enforcement officer on rare occasion.

Concealed carry is better anyway.

Why do you hate America!?! This is the only way to leave the house!

My bigger issue with Publix is how dang overpriced I found it when I lived in Tropical America.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
I go there only for marrow bones for the dogs, and only because I can't find them anywhere else.

Other than that, I can spend $11.99 for a box of cereal and a 2-liter soda at Publix, or $6.20 at Walmart. I can buy the marrow bones with what I save.

That, and the fact that there are few true BOGOs, replaced in large part by "buy TWO, get ONE free" sales. Or the occasional "buy TWO, get TWO free." Because I love lugging around 8 liters of soda.

In Alabama, if something at Publix is on BOGO, if you buy one you get it at half price. I buy lots of staple goods for us on BOGO, because even if we are not out of that item I know we'll use it. I like the bakery as well. That said, I'm liking Aldi more and more because overall things just cost less and the quality is decent.

As to open carry, a concealed carry permit is no longer required, so I expect that there are plenty of pistols out there. On the whole I'm unbothered by it. If some whackjob starts shooting there's probably another armed person in the store, and the odds that I'll get caught in it are very low.

Buy two get two sales on soft drink 12-packs are a gold mine for me. I usually only drink one a day so that sets me up for more than a month and a half.

I ran into an off-duty police officer I know in a local shop last week. Even though he was in plain clothes, he had his gun in a holster on his hip. It definitely struck me as unusual even though I know he is a police office. I couldn't help wondering what people who didn't know that thought about him when they saw the gun.
