Like him or hate him, and most here probably either despise him or avoid him altogether, this is a pretty decent profile.

Makes me feel sorry for him.

It is also depressing to learn that isn't just schtick, makes me dislike him even more.

Hmmmm. Online version and print view version don't have it on there. It's by a guy named Paul Solotaroff. Not familiar with his work.

This explains a lot, actually. The hyper-competitive persona, obsession with appearing to be right, general sense of vanity, on and on.

So what's Whitlock's excuse? Is there a couch big enough for Men's Journal to place him on?

Solorofff also wrote this excellent story on Dave Duerson's suicide, which might have been discussed here at some point:

Good piece. Thanks for the link.

Did not know that about his family dynamic and that he does not speak to his famous chef brother Rick. Definitely played a role in making him the way he is, from the way he takes care of himself, his focus and his always-right attitude.

Soloroff wrote the famous piece about bodybuilding "The Power and the Glory" that ran in Best American Sports Writing of the Century, so Norin can take that information and rub two sticks together and return with a witty comment about how that means hes not all that great, but SJ The Illuminati will demand you jerk him off anyway.

I read the Solotaroff piece that DD mentioned on byliner. I give him the thumbs up.

I wonder if he confirmed Bayless' claims about his family. It wouldn't be the first time Skip has exaggerated, perhaps even outright lied, about his past and Rick had kind things to say about his parents on Top Chef Masters.

Just finished it. It's quite a good profile. I can't for the life of me imagine how it was fact checked, though.

It was well-written, but falls flat after the start.

Standard stuff about how controversial Bayless is. Which is interesting to read, but the writer never came back to the family stuff. Skip's brother's kinda famous, would have been worth getting him. As is, it's just another "Skip is so WILD!!!" feature with a compelling beginning.

Not sure if this is violating any rules, but can't find a better link. This appears to the be the story DD refers to.

There's also an excellent profile of Buck Showalter in the link I posted to Soloroff's MJ profile.

Maybe Norrin will give one of them a look. If it is not beneath him to read someone he has never heard of. ProTip: Read the first few grafs, and if it doesn't interest you, click the cute little x to close the window.

Seems that the rift between Skip and Rick and his sister is because he turned his back on the family. I seriously doubt he would lie about something so serious in a national magazine, but what do I know. Would have been nice to get Rick's take, for sure, but I doubt he would be willing to speak for a profile on his brother for a national magazine if they are not on good terms.

I have no idea if he would lie about it or not, but even one quote from an old friend saying Skip had a rough childhood would have added a lot of weight, especially when he was busted embellishing details of his adolescent athletic career earlier this year.

I agree. Just very doubtful that Rick would speak on it. Guessing Skip doesn't have many close friends now, much less from his childhood. Tough to confirm that his parents were alcoholics and/or abusive, so I'll take his word for it.
