Keenum's best shot to win it was for Houston to go undefeated, but that obviously didn't happen. I think he'll continue to gain momentum throughout November, but if Tebow, Ingram or McCoy lights it up in their respective conference championship games (and chances are, at least one of them will), it's over.

Keenum had his best game against UTEP in a game Houston lost. His defense has put him in bad positions every game and he for once he couldn't overcome them. Not on him.

I know it wasn't on him, but if Houston was undefeated, they'd be getting talked up for a BCS bowl, which would obviously increase Keenum's exposure.

The problem I have with this line of thinking is that it is obvious that McCoy isn't less talented or went out and didn't play as well against those teams. It's that Keenum and McCoy play for two different teams that go about their business differently. When Houston stepped on the field against some of those teams, the coaches knew that the only chance they had was to make defense a secondary focus and acknowledge that those teams were going to get their points, and instead focus on making it into a passing shootout. It's a game plan that has taken Houston pretty far this year (although one of the games you focused on was UTEP, which beat Houston, and Texas beat UTEP 64-7, meaning whatever McCoy's numbers compared to Keenum, he didn't have to throw for 500 yards [and still lose the game]. When Houston lost to UTEP 58-41, by the way, Keenum had 536 yards passing and 5 TDs, but he attempted 76 passes. Put a lot of quarterbacks into that system and they would look pretty damned good. Texas beat UTEP 64-7 [why you play the game, not to compile stats] and in contrast McCoy only attempted to throw 35 times. He was relieved because it wasn't even close and they put in a freshman backup to get experience (who went 5 for 6 for 49 yards, which if anything diminishes what Keenum was able to do against them). Week after week, Texas goes out and plays defense, and tries to establish a fairly balanced running/passing game. They are 9-0 and have played a tougher schedule than Houston. Keenum's numbers are impressive, but they play track meet football games that puts him on the field for more time allowing him to pad his stats, and they have him throwing the ball for insane numbers of attempts. That will pad anyone's stats.

As for padding stats, Meyer had Tebow throwing against Vandy with the score 27-3 and 5 minutes to go. Hernandez took a short pass and went 64 yards and Meyer took him out.

I would say Keenum's best chance is to go undefeated through the regular season, win the CUSA championship, and have Ingram get shut down in the SEC championship game (or hurt before that).

Actually, I almost posted something along these lines a couple of weeks ago, but thought better of it. Keenum is a fine quarterback and he's having a great season, but he's also a system guy that is required to throw it a lot for his team to win. In a year when there isn't a true front runner, Keenum's got a chance, but I think the Heisman is Ingram's to lose and if Bama beats Florida in the SEC championship game, he'll win it.

Trust me, I loved giving the few Cougar fans hell after that loss. I was predicting a loss to an inferior opponent a la East Carolina the season before. People trashed me, so I trolled the hell out of them after that UTEP game. It is pretty sad when your school sets an attendance record with about 30,000 fans at a home game. They then proceeded to rush the field after defeating an unranked 2-1 team by 1 point. A 2-1 team that had wins over North Dakota and Rice.

The hilarity of the Cougar fanbois after their Tech victory was great. Many fans were predicting an imminent invitation to the Big XII.

Every player who has ever won the Heisman was a system guy. That argument has no weight.

I agree that this is the worst Heisman race probably since 1989. I just hope Tebow doesn't win by default.
