Well, Smith is no Scorsese, and I think he'd be the first one to tell you that. And I don't know much about directors, to be honest; for as much as I study television, I know about the opposite about behind the movie screens -- aside from Sandler and Smith. I have no clue what Mann did, and of all Lee's movies, I've only seen Girl 6 more than once; that was only because a 13-year-old kid likes to hear girls talk dirty.
I can see where you wouldn't like Smith. But to call him talentless is at least a tad off. Clerks and Chasing Amy, I think, are the only two films he's made where I can't envision anyone not liking enjoying their time. For the other movies, it kind of helps to know the characters' backgrounds or the running stories -- Julie drowning in the pool, etc. -- but Clerks, for the obvious reason, those things aren't necessary, and Chasing Amy's story is so good, nothing else matters.
If people are mimicking them -- and I'm guilty of it at times, too -- then it's probably just because they've seen each flick about 41 times. (Because they're really good.)
But you've got your opinions, my friend, and I respect them.
