Season 5, by all accounts, was the show's worst year. Even the series' creators acknowledged they messed up, and they've promised to right the ship, starting right away in the premiere.

Does HIMYM suit up and get back to being legen- (*wait for it*) -dary tonight?

Discuss.

So who was getting married? Barney? Robin? Someone not yet seen?

And it was a good episode. The part about Marshall strutting out of the office and getting high fives as he was off to have sex with his wife made her even laugh.

I missed the first few seconds. Did they say how far in the future that was?

My guess it it's Ted's dad's wedding. Robin maybe, but could Ted ever get that close to a boyfriend/fiance? Plus, it would take some serious, serious nads for the writers to tie Barney up in another relationship. Someone new ... I don't know how. I can't imagine they add a new main character at this point.

The only other this is some lame rehashing of vows between Marshall and Lilly. Maybe the baby issue drives them apart.

Has any couple on a sitcom ever just started screwing and gotten pregnant, by the way? What do you want to bet there is some weird issue that at least postpones their having a baby.

Groomsman maybe, but best man? Really? I know it's a TV show, but still.

I've attended a wedding like that. Admittedly, the maid of honor/best man was the bride's twin brother but he was still the first person in the processional for the bride.

For the most part I liked the premiere tonight. As promised by Carter/Bays, all the characters were given season-long story arcs to begin, which was much more true to the show's roots than the one-off episodes we had all last year.

One thing did annoy me though. On the press tour, here is what Craig Thomas said, via Alan Sepinwall's blog:

One example, without saying too much, we did this a lot last season: "I was dating this girl..." And the audience is supposed to think, "Is that the mother or not?" That trick that we've done for five years - is this one The Mother? - we're going to put that trick to bed

If the bait-and-switch with Rachel Bilson's friend at the bar wasn't the exact same thing, then it was pretty damn close.

Ok, I'll play. If Ted's Robin's best man/maid of honor, then Lilly must be dead.

(I'm trying to post as many theories on this so that when we find out, someone can quote me and say "Hey, nice one, Pilot." ... I've always really wanted that to happen.)

Enjoyed it. Laughed out loud at this exchange...

Lilly: Marshall, a big package just arrived.

Marshall: Yeah it did!

It absolutely was. You'd think they could have at least made it through the first episode before going back to that well.

Great slow-motion sequence at the end when the two girls started kissing. Everybody is stunned, but Barney whips out his cellphone camera to get a picture.

Are Lilly's boobs even bigger this season than post-baby last season?

Well SoCalDude just talked about the three best parts of the show for me.

Good episode. Not great, but it will suffice.

While the mother teases were basically the same old, the writing was much tighter and there was less Ted whining. I still like it better when Barney is a winner instead of Larry from Three's Company, but it was still very funny.

And Lily was sure showing off the girls last night -- I assume some off season surgery was done.

It's been quite awhile since this show was good. I thought last night was mediocre at best. I want to know how it ends, but I'm sick of watching what happens between now and then.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why they have Mike and Molly at 9:30 while Rules of Engagement gets the 8:30 slot.

I am constantly stunned at what they get away with on 2 1/2 Men, but holy crap does that show suck.

I actually enjoy Rules of Engagement, but nobody would ever mistake it for a great show. I think it just kind of accepts what it is.

Well, Lily came out and told Ted that it was time for the Best Man toast, so I'm thinking she's not dead. Also, she was in a bridesmaid dress. Ted and Marshall were both groomsmen/best man. I'd guess it was Barney, but who the hell knows.

Unless it is someone who we haven't met, the only choices are Barney, Robin, Barney/Robin or the lesbian couple (if only because we know the mother has a connection to both her and Ted, even though Marshall and Lily make no sense). My gut tells me it is Barney/Robin and that is the season, but not series, finale.

What if it's Barney and Robin?

Last season sucked so bad that I have three episodes toward the end of the year still burning space on the DVR and I don't really have any desire to watch them. Did watch the season finale and didn't feel like I missed anything.

The season opener was better than most of last year, but I'm not ready to call it back to what it was or anything.

And maybe Lilly's boobs remain quite impressive because she's still breastfeeding. Or she got surgery.
