One more thing. Two more things that make it a good job:

1. You could potentially move up there without having to move. Always a bonus.
2. If that doesn't work, it's a job where you can get another job from. Can you go to the NYT or the Washington Post? Probably not. Could you get a nice college beat job at a good paper after a couple of years of busting your butt here? Absoutely.

And I still don't work there.

seems unlikely that you could "move up without having to move" considering they're moving their UNC beat writer back to preps. but it does seem like you could move backwards without having to move.

Nope, just one. We filled Kellie's job internally (go back to the first page of this thread for the details) and converted a college beat writer's position to a second prep writer's slot. (Repeat after me: Local, local, local.). Several years ago we had three prep writers, and we had no shortage of stuff to cover. And we still don't: Two writers is more in line with what we need - we have 14 (soon to be 15) public high schools in Guilford County alone, and we pick up another three during basketball season.

Thanks for the geography lesson on Tighsqueeze. It's good to know that Golden Skillet chicken still exists somewhere in the world. Man, that was some mighty fine chicken.

The honest answer to your question is yesterday.

The realistic answer is that, with the holidays and everything that goes on in November (my favorite month as a sports fan, my least favorite month as a Sports guy) is we probably won't get someone in here until December or January. We haven't started interviewing yet, and we're still getting resumes.

I always break into the editor's office at night and move my resume to the top of the stack. Hasnt gotten me any jobs yet, but I do have two misdemeanor BnE's so that's something.
