The Press Democrat, a New York Times Company and Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, has an immediate opening for an experienced high school sports reporter. This position is our lead high school writer to cover and coordinate print and extensive online content and presentation for 40 high schools in a three-county area of Northern California’s Wine Country. We are looking for someone committed to expanding our online presence and connection to the community. Familiarity with the online world of blogs, Twitter and video, along with skills at developing sources, reporting exclusive news and meeting deadlines are essential.

Santa Rosa has popped up a few times before on these boards, receiving largely positive reviews each time.

Great paper to work for. They cover a big area but don't do a lot of in-person coverage outside a small 20-mile radius. All the small school stuff is handled over the phone.

Because this is the first time I've visited in a couple of weeks and am somewhat out of the loop, please forgive me if I missed something, but does this opening mean the old prep guy got the 49ers gig with the paper?

Hey, kinfolk. What this job be? They hiring young or someone with some chops on they bones?

I'm a big fan of your posts and I have to say this is one of it not the best.

Thanks for the words, my man. I'm just trying to get the DL before I hit that slab, ya dig?

What's the time frame for this opening? Is it expected to be filled quickly or will it take some time? Has anyone been contacted yet?

You're hired! You start tomorrow.

I don't mean to be rude, and I'm probably going to start something here ... but the "you're hired" bit is pretty damn tired. An honest question (or in this case three) always seems to get the same childish response. It's not funny now. I don't think it ever really was. You're writers for Christ's sake. Come up with something better.

For some people, it's their only joy in life.

You are definitely not hired.

*Crosses you off the list*

So is it even worth asking if anyone actually has any answers to my questions?

I don't have the answers to your specific questions (except with regard to myself).

But, in general, jobs that start out going through a company link or HR department, as this one does on the JJobs site, usually will take longer to process. (And, sometimes, filling a job may take months).

I applied for this position, and have not heard back yet. That may or may not mean anything as of yet.

You should realize that, if you're not going to get a job, you often won't hear anything, ever, either way. As bad, unhelpful and unfortunate as that is, it's just the way it is.

So, basically, if you really want to know something, you need to contact someone directly if the paper has not contacted you, and then, go from there.

Fear, write is right. Don't mean to have a smart-alecky play on words, but hey, we're writers. Honestly, one would think a newspaper would like to have a prep writer in place, since we're only halfway into football and fall sports season. But the fact is, those who make these decisions in this day and age don't care an iota how much a scribe is needed. I'm with Write: Pick up the phone and start calling people. You can be persistent without being a pest.
