Help! I think computer has a virus

[Evil ... Thy name is Orville Redenbacher!!]

I'm pretty sure my desktop computer has a virus. The computer is about a year old and Norton Anti-virus expired.
The Internet is running very slow, so I think I have a virus.. as I have erased my cookie cache and all that other stuff. I have CC Cleaner and Ad-Ware on it and run those regularly, but I still think I have a virus or bug.
What can I do?
Can I download any free anti-virus software?
Can I download any free scans that may detect and delete the virus or am I going to have take it to the shop?
We did that with our last computer about three years ago and cost me about $160.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Yea, AVG is as good as the big name guys.

But a flash drive (if you don't already have one), put everything you can't afford to lose on it and wipe your hard drive. Note, this only works if you have a restore disk and if you don't, call up your computer manufacturer and have them send one to you. It will likely cost you like $20, but it's better to have peace of mind and start from scratch than worry about losing personal information and/or acting too late and having the virus fry your system.

I would get a full rundown of everyone on there from Hi-jack this. Then, anything it raises questions about that you don't know what is, you delete AFTER you've looked up what it is to make sure you don't need it.

AVG, for whatever reason, is not as good as it used to be.

Unfortunately, if somebody is determined to **** up your computer, they're going to find a way to do it.

But Macs are catching more viruses nowadays as the Windows-mode or Windows-compatability use increases.
