He gone.

He'd have been crushed if they hadn't fired him. He's been managing like a guy trying to get canned since the Beckett-Gonzalez trade.

Do I need to get Clay Buchholz flowers and chocolates or will the more traditional beer and chicken do?

To the surprise of almost no one who's paid more than two minutes' worth of attention to the major leagues this year.

What was his contract and how long and how much will they be paying him to go on TV and trash the hell out of them?

I love that part of it.

I, too, would be interested to know how much he'll be making over the next few years.

He has one year left on a two-year contract and reportedly will receive $2.5 million.

Chump change for 'em.

As already posted, one year, $2.5 million.

Now does Valentine go back to ESPN until he finds a landing spot? And how do they not pair him with Francona to discuss the chaos on Yawkey Way?

I feel like he would make more sense for a small market team that can't find it's way into the headlines.

He's done as a manager.

This season is not entirely his fault, as he was dealing with a clubhouse of petulant millionaires, but his bizarre behavior didn't win him any favors.

Bobby's main problem is that Bobby, at least outwardly, acts like Bobby is the smartest guy Bobby's ever known.

Again, the guy is not 100 percent to blame. Club Fenway tuned him out early, and he was given a crap roster (especially in the final month).

wicked beat me to it. But I agree, he's definitely filled out his last major league lineup card.

Has he entered Matt Millen territory where his analysis will be mocked because he has turned into a clown?

Because Francona will be managing my Indians!!!

Was watching this as it happened. It was a true WTF moment. Assume they just had both features in the can and aired the wrong one. Oops.

I doubt it, just because his record of dismal failure is essentially just one year with the Red Sox, and even that has caveats and what not. Also, a baseball manager generally isn't seen as in-control as an NFL coach or GM. Millen had essentially a decade of failure, give or take a couple of years, and he's probably only matched by Elgin Baylor.

It was a terrible idea from the jump for both parties for Valentine to be hired by the Sox, but it shouldn't affect his commentating career. It was pretty obvious from spring training on this gig wasn't going to work out. Color guys are entertainers, and he can do that.

I agree. Millen and Baylor's prolonged lack of success far outdoes what Valentine was able to do (or not do) in his year with Boston. He'll be back at ESPN soon enough.
