I'm sure this same smart-ass comment gets trotted out every year but the Continental Congress actually voted to separate from Britain on July 2, 1776. And historians are divided about if the Declaration was actually signed on the fourth or about a month earlier.

But on this most hallowed of journalism boards, let us celebrate the most famous press release in history.

Does anyone REALLY go to those Fourth of July sales, be they for mattresses, cars or clothes?

Probably because we waited to politely negotiate our independence? ;)
I have to admit, less bloodshed that way.

I was very surprised to learn that Canada became independent in 1867, two full years after the American Civil War ended.

Trashy neighbors have been doing fireworks at 11 p.m. each night for the last five days. The cat's about to pack his cat luggage and leave home.

We like to take our time and do things right!

Pet peeve for the day: The point of Independence Day is to celebrate our nation's independence from Britain. It is not a "thank the troops day." Carry on.

Yeah, nothing irks e more than members of the military getting thanked more often than they deserve.

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

That's fine. Every day can be thank the troops day if you'd like it to be. But the point of Independence Day is not to thank the troops. That's all I'm saying.

Is there a rule book on how to appropriately celebrate Independence Day that I missed?

Bart: I just think our veterans deserve a little recognition.
Lisa: That's what Veterans Day is for, Bart.
Bart: But is that really enough to honor our brave soldiers?
Lisa: They also have Memorial Day!
Bart: Oh, Lisa, maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong, the important thing is that veterans deserve a day to honor them!
Lisa: They have two!
Bart: Well, maybe they should have three. I'm Bart Simpson.
