So I'm back on the (non-lean meat) market. Not that I was off that long. Just the timing sucks -- although it does eliminate one (expensive) person from my shopping list!

How do y'all meet people in this business? Other than co-workers. The few women in my shop around my age are dating/engaged/married. I don't plan on sleeping with the fishies anytime soon. I'm not a bar guy, unless I'm vacationing in Canada with strangers, some of them out to see my spleen removed. (Hi Jones!) I have no neighbors who take it up the ass.

I'm also trying to get an early jump on 2007 Thread of the Year.

Huh?

Busdriver is a girl. Alley Allen's ex. She of the 'botty call' fame.

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

I miss too much of the good stuff around here.

Also, I was thinking of busuncle for some reason.

Wicked:
WARNING: Do not take relationship advice from IJAG.
Or from me, either, for that matter.

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

you mean you won't tell me to go the brown-eye route?

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

I met my wife almost 13 years ago. I had moved back to my native area a few months earlier and had immediately reunited with an old girlfriend. That experiment ended rather quickly and painfully and I really was temporarily uninterested in meeting someone when I asked the woman at the next table at a restaurant if she could pass the salt. Eight months later we were living together.

My experience was that I could try all kinds of things to meet women, but the best ones were when I wasn't really looking.

That's exactly what he's telling you, Charlie Brown.

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

I met my fiancee on here, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask advice about anything.

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

Depending on how great your need may be for companionship/bumpin' uglies, you may want to consider putting up some coin for one of those Net-based personal ad thingies. I've never seen one of these myself, but seeing as how every third commercial seems to be an ad for these types of things, I'm guessing it's become pretty mainstream.

There's still, for whatever reason, an occasional stigma to doing this, but I'm not sure why. I had a boss who went on one of those sites and ended up with a very attractive, thouroughly charming and quite intelligent long-term girlfriend.

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

Wicked,

That truly sucks. For your sake, I hope the split was mutual.

As for getting back on the market, wait on that for the time being. Don't try to force anything. Just be yourself.

A few suggestions:

1. Hang with your buddies. Just don't be the whiny, "I can't believe she's gone" buddy. Nobody wants to hang around a downer, so don't be one.

2. Make a list of what you want to do. Go to Vegas, drive cross-country, whatever. Just do what you want to do before you get involved in another serious relationship. If you wait, you'll either never do them or have to bring your significant other along and if she's not really into what you want to do, that'll ruin (or at least diminish) your experience.

3. Save money, save money, save money. Nothing drains the ol' wallet faster than a girlfriend. I can't believe the amount of money I hemmorhaged while I dated the current Mrs. Hack. Now, she wishes we didn't spend $100 or more a night going out 2-3 times a week. Thanks for telling me that now, sweetheart.

4. Take risks. If you're single and unattached to a community, apply for that job that might just be out of your reach. Or if you want to try another profession, now is the best time to give it a shot.

5. Let love come to you. Don't try to force anything. Just relax and be yourself. Who knows? You could be like Frank, and one day, the woman who passes you the salt or who bumps into you at a bookstore could be the one. Or she could just be a great lay and confidence booster for a few weeks. Remember, the next one isn't always The One. Be patient and you'll realize if it's meant to be.

That's all I come up with for now. Hope this helps.

PS -- If she dumped you and you already purchased her gift, return it and buy something for yourself. A TV, stereo, lap dance, whatever. Or, blow it at a casino somewhere near you.

Both of my sisters and my best friend from college met their husbands on Internet dating sites.

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

It's surprisingly easy to meet women at either the supermarket (late at night) or a good bookstore.

Re: Give newly single Wicked relationship advice

Did she cheat on her fiance with you -- twice -- tell you that she wanted to be with you, lead you to believe that she would end things with said fiance to be with you, and then get married to him anyway? Cause if not, you'll be back on your feet in no time. Freelance's lap dance suggestion is a glorious one.

I concur. Everyone, no matter what they look like, has to eat.

SC,

I'm not wicked, but if I were him, the last thing I'd need is an appointment with Dr. Neil Clark Warren.

My lawyer sister used that one. The other one and my friend used match.com. Course now you have Dr. Phil with that one.

Can't say I'd use any of them immediately after a relationship ended.
