(April 12, 2007) — Gannett Co. Inc. said today it has agreed to sell four newspapers, including the Utica Observer-Dispatch, to Perinton, N.Y.-based GateHouse Media for $410 million.
The deal, which requires regulatory approval, is expected to close at the end of the month.
The other three papers are the Norwich Bulletin of Connecticut; the Rockford Register Star of Illinois; and the Herald-Dispatch of Huntington, W.Va.
“This sale makes perfect sense for Gannett as we move forward under our strategic plan,†Sue Clark-Johnson, president of Gannett’s Newspaper Division, said in a statement. “It’s very difficult to say good-bye. We deeply appreciate all the hard work by the employees of these terrific newspapers over the many years they have been part of the Gannett family.â€
Gannett had owned the Utica newspaper since 1922.
