I figured this would be the best way to get the results out since so many of us in the state are regulars on the site. Congrats to all the winners and there will be a FREE luncheon held in Tampa during the FSWA annual Media Days meetings on Saturday, July 28. Winners and non-winners may attend and receive FREE food and awards.

Yes. Very odd indeed, especially considering how the Post won the APSE Triple Crown (am I correct?)

1) Competition for sections in Florida is TOUGH.
2) Post (and the other SF papers) had the biggest news story of the year in Florida -- Saban leaving for Alabama -- and did a great job with it. That probably accounts at least in some part for the reporting success and might explain why they did well in writing but were beaten in section.

Palm Beach might get Triple Crowns left and right, but they're not going against bigger papers like they are here in Florida. And if the APSE circulation categories change as expected, those Triple Crowns will be a lot tougher to get.

Look at Moddy's post again. That's what raises the biggest question. If the same panel of judges that looked at the writing categories also judged the overall sections -- as it appears is the case, then it doesn't make sense that the Post got shutout in the Daily and Sunday categories.

Yes, it could. Section judging is the entire thing. Writing is individualized. You see it in APSE a lot, where papers get writers who win awards but not the section and vice versa.

Sure it does. Daily and Sunday categories have nothing to do with the writing awards. Quite possibly, the sections submitted for the former had none of the stories in the latter.

And this raises another topic. Perhaps they didn't win the Daily and Sunday categories because of design. Is that fair? As our news editor likes to say, "We've never had a reader cancel their subscription because they didn't like the design of the paper."

I'm kind of torn. I see your point as far as the comment made by your SE, but since these contests are specific to the profession and the entire process that goes into putting out a section is what's being judged, I also can understand why design is given so much weight.
