LOS ANGELES - Oscar-nominated director John Singleton was driving a Lexus SUV when it struck and killed a jaywalker who stepped in front of the car, police said Friday.

Singleton, 39, immediately stopped his car and waited for police to arrive after the accident Thursday night in the city's Jefferson Park neighborhood, said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.

"Mr. Singleton stopped and identified himself as required by law and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol," Lee said. "He was questioned and released."

Was the Lexus a hybrid? If not he's already killing people with his automobiles emitions.

What a horrible thing for Singleton to go through. Can you imagine having that image stuck in your head for the rest of your life, just because you randomly happened to be the car that was passing by at that moment?

Could happen to any of us if somebody isn't in a crosswalk and isn't looking.

I can't believe he's only 39. Boyz N The Hood was what, 16 years ago?

If only that woman had watched the first 30 seconds of Boyz N The Hood ....

Earl's a police officer in LA?

So is John a Menace II Society?
Or was he drinking too much JUICE?
I wouldn't call it Poetic Justice.
Did this occur in New Jack City?

Should have followed the sage advice as follows: Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood

Funny how God works: John Singleton is known as arguably THE most arrogant man in Hollywood. As you can imagine, that's a pretty impressive list to top. The EPK of his most recent movie -- Illegal Tender, which opened last night -- includes him in EVERY SINGLE SHOT of the behind the scenes footage, and he's NOT EVEN THE DIRECTOR!

Perhaps this tragedy might open his eyes a bit to the error of his attitude.

Is he "known" or is it arguable that Singleton is the most arrogant?

I didn't know that was debated in a town obsessed with no-panty shots of the rich and stupid.

New Jack City was Mario Van Peebles, not Singleton.

Rosewood, however, was a terrific film, as was his Shaft remake.

I always thought jaywalking was a victimless crime. What a fool I was...

Shaft was awful.

Agreed. But at least it let Christian Bale work on his "rich idiot" persona. Helped him with the Bruce Wayne, wealthy playboy scenes in Batman Begins.
