Sitting behind an iMac. Why?
Saying the country is in transportation “death spiral,” a national commission today recommended as much as a 40-cent increase in the federal gas tax to unclog our highways.

So, I guess their way of unclogging the highways is taxing gas to the point that nobody drives?

Yep . . . let's flush the economy and the middle class FURTHER down the crapper.

Douchenozzles.

I'm OK with this, as long as my cheap newspaper raises how much it pays us per mile. It would be really good if the Feds said the states get the money, but x-amount of it must go toward building/improving mass transit.

This is one of those things that the renowned "limousine liberals" who live IN big cities just love, because it feels good, rakes in cash, and won't affect THEM.

Yeah...no.

And I guess the idea of using the tax and toll money that's already being collected to pay for our roads in the way it was intended instead of to build ****ing bike paths is a non-starter...

I love the idea. Of course, I've got a lot of railroad stock.

Which doesn't matter because the airline lobby will kill any chance of quality passenger rail in this country.

Hell, Southwest Airlines by itself effectively killed off a high-speed rail link between Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston a few years ago.

Hartford wants to build a high-speed railway link from Bradley Airport to both New York and Boston. Not sure how that's going to go over.

Actually, if we built more bike paths and rode our bikes more we wouldn't need toll booths. Not to mention how we'd help the enviroment and save thousands of lives a year.

Sounds like your car is driving you. You've got to simplify maaaaaaaaaan.

Uh, sure... Bike paths will fix everything.

Obviously that national commission never took Economics 101 or missed the lecture about how increasing taxes during a time of economic distress could result in worse conditions.

Idiots.

Yeah, my 55-mile commute will be much easier on a bike. This is not the news I wanted to hear after moving the said 55 miles away from the office less than a month ago.

No, but they definitely make a difference in big cities.

Bike paths won't fix everything but it'd be a start in larger metropolitan communities.

I watched a piece on CBC a while back about Portland Oregon which I understand has the largest numbers of bike commuters per capita because of the well developed and well thought out series of bike paths.

Toronto pretends to do that but they system is a hodge-podge and doesn't encourage bike commuting.

It's like public transit.

Toronto has a pretty good system by North American standards but it still is not as good as it should be and they constantly spend money on the wrong things.

On a good day it's maybe a fifteen to twenty minute drive to my office in rush hour.

Taking publlic transportation means a bus, subway, and then a bus that takes a scenic route through a ****ing residential neighbourhood. Takes an hour and ten minutes. Sorry, ain't worth it. And it's only about 19 kilometres. That's about 11 miles or so.

Oh, and they're expecting gas up here to hit $1.30 a litre by the summer. That's about $5.70 a gallon.

Bike paths will fix everything. Like that downturn in murders, rapes and muggings.

Sorry, what's your point?

The discussion is, if all of a sudden gas is 30% higher, what are the alternatives?
