One of the producers said Rick was out 4-5 weeks, and the first season of Fear will be over about three weeks but won't catch up to the point that Rick wakes up. So really we're talking a few days to a week after Rick was shot in the WD's first episode.

Good episode. Not just better than the premier, but good all around.
And that episode goes directly to my point about the first, you don't need a ton of zombie-fighting action or have to "give away" the season in the first episode in order to have pace and tempo to the episode.
The Stepford fans should look at that second episode and think, 'Wow, why wasn't the premier like that?'

Unlike TWD, I wasn't instantly hooked on Fear. But I watched the pilot again and episode two last night, and am now hooked.
I like the pacing, and how they're showing how everything breaks down. Favorite character so far is Tobias.

Watch the early scene of him walking down the hall. He has his back to the camera and then turns his head.

The scene with the man coming home to find his wife had turned was well done, as was the kill shot when the military arrived.

Another good epsiode.
The difference in experience between Ruben Blades, who is always awesome, and the Travis character is a nice element. Not only when Ruben Blades saves Travis from the walker, but later in their responses to the arrival of the National Guard.
Also, when Travis stops the woman from killing the Margaret Cho walker, which direclty leads Margaret Cho almost eating her husband.
Travis is too slow to understand what needs to be done, plus Travis promised the woman he would be around for her = Travis is going to die.

I just read the AV Club review.
- The Monopoly scene was dumb.
- The trellis maze was also dumb.
- Reviewer missed the point when Ruben Blades said "It's already too late." He's talking about the arrival of the military, not the plague. He's from El Salvador and does not see military response as a good thing.
I thing the Monopoly scene worked well. They're still in the very early stages of the zombie apocalypse, hoping things will get better, not knowing the horror that we know is coming. It takes them back to a more innocent time, when the father was still alive, when the boy wasn't a junkie, when the world made sense -- when they could laugh without looking over their shoulder. It's an attempt to ward off the creeping sense of impending ...

But I think the real intent is to show the differing perspectives based their personal histories.

This episode had a lot of little things that made you think. The husband finding his wife and going in for a hug was touching and very well done.
People have brought up the monopoly scene as a sign of trying to keep things normal—including making the loser cleanup—but what about Travis and his neighbor taking out the trash? We know what's coming. We know that trash service is over, but they don't. They still believe this will be over in a week or two. What is more normal than putting the cans out on trash day?
