The Potter Leader-Enterprise, an award-winning weekly newspaper in North Central Pennsylvania, is looking for a creative, dynamic and professional sports and general news writer, with the possibility of advancement. If you’re a true Jack(or Jill)-of-all-trades, this job might be for you. As a member of the editorial team, you’ll be reporting, writing, editing, photographing events and games, designing pages and developing our online presence. Getting the most out of the position means you’ll get to try new things, meet interesting people and learn something every day. It’s anything but boring, and we’re looking for an enthusiastic candidate to go at it head-on.
The position is perfect for those wanting more out of a newspaper job, or for new college graduates looking to make their mark. The ideal candidate would rather be out hunting down stories and covering high school athletics than sitting in an office (though you will get your own work space), and would rather communicate face-to-face than by email. We’re situated in a small mountain town where the outdoors is life, and your sources become your friends. The newspaper plays an important part in the community, and we’re looking for someone to help make it even better.
How to get hired here:
Step 1 - WOW us with your amazing and down to earth personality. No phonies or arrogance allowed here.
Step 2 - Be an awesome writer. Prove this to us with samples from school or past jobs. We might even send you out on an assignment if you come to visit.
Step 3 - Know AP style like the back of your hand. Know how to edit others’ writing to fit it, and know how to integrate AP with your own unique writing style.
Step 4 - Be a geek and love computers. When we’re not out having fun with stories, we work with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, so knowing those will score you major points.
Step 5 - Show us your passion. Everyone wants a job, sure. But this newspaper is more than a job - it’s a way of life. Show us you’re committed to becoming a part of it and the community.
Step 6 - Have a good balance of professionalism and informality. We’re not the New York Times, but we’re not a half-baked gossip rag, either.
Requirements:
College degree in Communications, Journalism, related field, or equivalent work experience.
Proven writing and photography skills.
A passion and knowledge of high school sports.
Familiarity with Adobe Indesign and Photoshop.
Ability to meet several weekly deadlines with great time management skills.
Strong knowledge of AP style and editing skills.
Desire to learn about the area and its people, and to become a part of the community.
Ability to work in a creative team, but also independently.
Having a sense of humor is mandatory.
