Stern's worst nightmare.

Hopefully not a D_B.

LAS VEGAS – In a potentially stunning move that reflects the growing challenge Europe's basketball leagues pose to the NBA, Atlanta Hawks free-agent forward Josh Childress is strongly considering a three-year, $20 million offer from Greek powerhouse Olympiakos, several league sources said Sunday night.

Maybe he'd like to see another part of the world. If basketball can allow him to do so, more power to him.

I really do not think that is the reason for the switch, but I'm guessing he can afford to fly, even if it has to be coach.

I don't know the reason for the switch, but I do know that if I had a job that could take me to faraway lands for a few years, I'd jump on it for the life experience. Maybe Childress wants to broaden his horizons and not just be a tourist.

The Memphis Grizzlies are the only remaining team with enough salary-cap room to make an offer exceeding the $5.6 million mid-level exception, and they so far seem content on saving their money for next summer. Several NBA GMs interested in Childress said they wouldn’t make a mid-level offer to him because they believe the Hawks would match.

LOL salary caps

This is not that big a deal. The free agent market has dried up, so Childress might go to Europe, probably for only a year. The deal might be for three years, but it would allow him to get out of his Greek contract and come back to the league after just one season, when there might be more NBA teams with $$ to spend. Hard to see this as the beginning of some trend where Europe is going to steal players from the NBA.

And he is not alone.
Nachbar leaves the Nets for Moscow:

Delfino gone as well.

Not exactly starters, but they are solid bench players.

It's an evil David Stern plot. He's planting the seeds for an NBA Europe takeover.

Anytime you can implement "planting seeds" and "NBA" in the same sentence, it's a winner.

He probably thinks he is just going to smoke the European players.

I know this isn't likely, but wouldn't it be cool if basketball eventually had a soccer-like Champions League? The game might one day get global enough for that to happen.

It's damn near there now in terms of talent. The only thing that keeps it from happening is jet lag. The Champions League spans only four time zones (like the continental U.S.). Add six hours of travel (in either direction) to that.

Dominique took the money and headed to Europe when he was still a very good player. Danny Ferry went when he was the No. 2 pick. It didn't start a flood of NBA-caliber players leaving the U.S. for Europe.

Raptors' reserve center Primoz Brezec has agreed to sign a contract with Rome's Virtus Roma.

The problem, though, with the "exodus" is that Delfino, Nachbar, Brezec are, you know, from Europe.
