He's one of the best football coach of all time, has five rings (3 as HC), and his players are fiercely loyal towards him.

Easy there, fanboy. I wasn't saying I wouldn't want a coach who brings in the rings. I once rooted for a miserable ******* in Bill Parcells (I do not root for the current miserable ******* coaching the Giants. I don't care what he does as a coach, I can't root for Tom Coughlin, he's too much of a prick. I'd like to see him fired ASAP).

I'm just saying that it's telling that Young, widely respected in the NFL (they named the Executive of the Year Award after him), said he's the worst person he's ever met and he wasn't talking about the fact that Belichick is grumpy in press conferences.

Defend him all you want as the coach of your favorite team, but Belichick is a scumbag. There's no way around that.

Oh, I'll agree that he's a scumbug asshole grumpy prick. I never said he wasn't, but I think that's all irrelevant. He lives and breathes football and is the best at his craft. Who really cares about his personality?

As far as his sickbed goes, that's a strong statement for not even knowing the guy. I know he has helped groom and is close with a number of fine football coaches, including Urban Meyer, Kirk Ferentz, Nick Saban, and Greg Schiano, four of the best in the college game.

I think the point stands that one does not have to be a miserable SOB to be successful. While Dungy isn't AS successful as Belichick, he's brought home the hardware and been a nice guy (some would argue inspirational) in the process.

I root for the Pats, but Belichick doesn't make it easy to do so. Similar to bostonbred, I try not to worry about what players, coaches, etc. do in their personal lives (to an extent) and try to enjoy watching them on the field, much the way I don't give a **** if an actor is bat**** crazy and try to just enjoy their performances onscreen.

Amen. When did everyone start caring so much about a guy's personality? This is professional sports. Winning is all that matters. If the guy is a good guy to boot, that's great, but far from a requirement. Plenty of great coaches are dickheads, plenty of bad coaches are great guys and the bottom line is fans/owners/players/etc. would prefer the former.

Dungy treats those around him with a greater degree of graciousness and respect than any football coach I've ever seen. And anyone in the Colts organization will tell you that means EVERYONE from the lowest janitorial guy on up, and also pretty means always, even after the most devastatingly painful defeats and the most devastatingly painful personal tragedy. There's not a dickheaded bone in his body.

That would be my guess, too. I don't agree with Dungy's views, but I can understand them. His faith tells him something is wrong, so he believes it is wrong. That doesn't mean he is automatically treating people badly, even the ones whose lifestyle he does not agree with.

That anti-gay label that some of you have tried to hang on Dungy is completely unfair bull****. And I say that as a guy who's pro gay-marriage and certainly no conservative.

Boobie, please back that up by showing me a single anti-gay remark that Dungy has ever made in his entire life. I bet you can't do it because he's never done it. He accepted an invitation to speak at a function for some christian organization called the Family Institute that takes an anti-gay marriage political position. Big ****ing deal.

Yeah, Dungy is a Christian, and yeah elements of the christian right can be annoying and dangerous. But his religious beliefs alone shouldn't cause anyone to call him a dickhead, instead dickheadedness should be judged by how he personally treats others, at least IMO. Imagine calling a muslim coach a dickhead solely because he adhered to the tenets of his faith.

I get the impression that some writers pounced on this only because they were tired of Dungy acting all classy and nice for all these years and were looking for some chink in the armour. They heard about this speaking gig and figured there it is, we can spin this into a claim that he's anti-gay, nevermind the fact that he's never actually said a hateful word about gays in his entire life.
