“I fear that they just would kill him, that he wouldn’t even have a chance,” she said as she styled a customer’s hair with a curling iron. One way to protect him, she suggested, would be not to vote for him.

While black historians routinely point out how the black male has quite often (but by no means always) deserted his family and left the household with one parent, this blurb from the story nonetheless shows the lingering mindset of older black women.
-------------------
“We always love Hillary because we love her husband,” Ms. Vereen said. Then she paused. Much of the chitchat in her shop is about whether a woman could or should be president.

“A man is supposed to be the head,” she said. “I feel like the Lord has put man first, and I believe in the Bible.”

That's not surprising at all. Black voters historically have this feeling that if a black candidate runs for President, and somehow, get the nomination or even have a chance of winning it, that individual would be shot killed before that reality ever happens. With that said, they are willing to go with someone who is a "safe" vote, rather than take the risk and voting for who they really want.

How We Choose a President 2008:
I'm not voting for Obama because he stopped wearing a flag lapel pin.
I'm not voting for Edwards because he pays too much for haircuts.
I'm not voting for Hilary because she has a weird laugh.
I'm not voting for Rudy because he dressed in drag a couple of times.
I'm not voting for Romney because his kids didn't serve in Iraq.
I'm not voting for Fred Thompson because his wife is too young.
I'm not voting for McCain because he has that weird scar on his face.

I am voting for Kucinich because his wife is hot.

Hillary Clinton doesn't even register in the same gender as Mrs. Kucinich.

She's easily two feet taller than he is, and she doesn't appear to give a ****.

Wears heels and stuff.

It's one of the great mysteries of our time.

He's got to be hung like John Holmes or far richer than we think.

She has a master's degree and a British accent.

I wish I was making this up.

And she married Dennis Kucinich.

Not such a mystery.

And isn't this why Colin Powell didn't run last time (or the time before that or something)? His wife feared an attempt on his life.

And because his wife has emotional instability issues and the people on the right made it quite clear that they would raise that "issue" if Powell ran.

I'm far from an Obama fan, but that's a damn shame. It really is.

Eddie Murphy did a bit on this line of thinking 25 years ago in Delirious.
