SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean naval ship was sinking on Friday after possibly being hit by a North Korean torpedo and several sailors were killed, South Korean media reported.

A South Korean warship later fired at an unidentified vessel toward the north, indicating a possible attack, and the South's presidential Blue House was holding an emergency security meeting, the Yonhap news agency said.

"The ship appears to have begun sinking after an explosion at the rear of the ship," Yonhap quoted the South Korean Navy saying in a statement. "We have been unable to find the exact cause of the incident as of this moment."

Ugh.

Seeing as how the two countries are still technically at war, I don't imagine it would take too much for a resumption of hostilities.

Pretty ballsy by North Korea if so, considering the people there are already supposedly not that far away from revolting against the government.

But the people aren't the ones with the guns. The army is apparently well fed and ready to fight (at least from what I understand).

You mean, other than the health care reform bill?

Hold your horses.

They can't even confirm that it was a torpedo that sunk the ship. Plus the South Korean navy was also firing at birds they thought were North Korean vessels.

So we can assume you are less than 9 years old

Aside from the last time there was a dustup in this same spot ... and the time before that ... no, I can't ever remember anything like it.

War is the health of the state.

S.Korean ship sinks after explosion, officials back off attack suspicion

They appear to be backing off the torpedo attack idea now. May have blown up on its own. Sue me.

Yes, I am older than 9. I forgot the incident in 2002 when a North Korean vessel was sunk killing an untold number of North Koreans [per Wikipedia], and I was only two when North Korean commandos landed in South Korea and over 100 were killed. But if it is an attack -- and I understand nobody's saying anything definitive at this point -- it ranks right up there in scale, at least according to the Wikipedia page I read. I haven't had time to exhaustively research anything.
