A nice package ... though the biggest photo on the page (the Moss one) is pretty weak to lead the cover. Kinda surprised they didn't find a better shot from the first Skins-Seahawks game of the season, especially since they obviously have access to Getty, Reuters and anything else they want. Something with a bit more impact, perhaps, like the Broncos-Pats photo.

Other than that, I like the built-in air and contrast in the type sizes. And the content is cool. Looking back at the previous matchups is something readers wouldn't immediately find when taking a spin through Yahoo or ESPN.com. Nice.

That page isn't saying anything you couldn't find in less than five minutes on the Internet. I know it's the Times, but space isn't being budgeted very well there. It's a big fat bloated rehash of old news.

This is a graphic I did for a publication called Blue Jackets Beat, which covers that NHL team. Team was riddled with injuries, so Vetrutian Man it was. (Inset is a detailed sliver of the graphic.)

Anything you like or didn't like?

I understand why the hockey shorts/pants/whatever are there, but it looks a bit out of place. I'd say it might have looked better with the whole outfit, if that was at all possible. I think that would better relate what you're trying to get across.

An reason there's an insert at the bottom?

The insert is there just to give an idea of what was written, since you wouldn't be able to actually read anything on the page as I posted it. (The blow-up wasn't printed).

Funny you mention using a whole outfit. My wife thought I should have left the hockey pants red as I had photographed them to make them stand out more; I tried to go more subtle and match the "DiVinci look".

Not trying to threadjack from the graphic, but I have a design question:

I have a feeling you're going to start seeing more color screens in papers, somewhat like what you see with a lot of the Latin papers on newspagedesigner. However, I've been told recently that colorblind people have problems reading text on top of a screen. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, are there certain color combinations to avoid? Does any color combination pose a problem, or just certain ones? Any ideas? I don't use them a lot, but would be a nice thing to know.

It's not so much a screen, but I did learn something earlier this year.

In a graphic I did, I used blue "highlights" in the copy for school names. I got a nasty E-mail from a reader who said people were unable to make copies of the graphic, because the blue did not show up on copies.

Red and green are typically hard for colorblind people to see. To them, the colors just look like different shades of gray. So that could have something to do with not being able to see type.

I loved the concept, not sure I'm sold on the hockey pants. Seemed almost too distracting. But using the image to list the injuries was brilliant.

Dress it up with all kinds of bells and whistles and have it take up 6 columns. Make it the most attractive NCAA Tournament graphic in the nation.

"But it will be too large, and readers won't be able to make copies of it for their pools," was the reply.

There wasn't much I could say to refute that.

Yeah, I got the same explanation, which made sense. Hey, less work to do (although we still have to change all the damn fonts ).

You mean you don't just run the agate listing of matchups, and to hell with the bracket lines? I'm shocked. You're going soft in your old age.

I've always run the bracket lines, and I check the records for mistakes. Then I fix those. Then I call AP and listen to their excuses for ****ing them up. Then they resend the brackets. Then I laugh at AP and all the people who have to update their brackets.

I don't know what this says about me but I find myself more and more disinterested in bowl previews.

NOW, THAT'S NOT THE DESIGNER'S FAULT, obviously. I like this page a whole lot, the way it was executed. Very clean. Like the greyouts for the Virginia teams.

A lot of people I know in the biz would have trouble giving roughly the same char count for each of the summaries.

I like this as a start-of-the-bowl-season type of deal. NOT if it's all the previewing you're going to do on the bowls.
