those 2 head shots should be vertically imposed and looking at one other across the page instead of top to bottom with other stories sandwiched between. then the other copy would be better at the top.

As a designer sometimes you take a chance, swing hard and just miss badly. There's probably not a designer worth his chops -- or a writer, for that matter -- who hasn't had that happen. How many times has the page looked like a million bucks on the screen, and you go home all proud and ****, and then you look at it on newsprint the next day and realize, wow, how could I have not seen this coming? It's part of getting better.

But that P-D front WAS a poor idea that wasn't thought through real well. There's no other way to put it. A designer should always take risks, but they should be practical and all the consequences need to be considered.

In these days of rising newsprint costs, it warms my heart to see that a newspaper still can give a few tons of it to 39 photos of rings.  ;D

(Of course, the new rules now say I'm supposed to come up with a better idea, and frankly, after a week of this crap, I do not have one.)

(Of course, the new rules now say I'm supposed to come up with a better idea, and frankly, after a week of this crap, I do not have one.)

I can't remember what paper it was (I think Tacoma, but I couldn't be sure - I'll go search for it again when I get a few free moments), but they did my favorite yearly Super Bowl page - a page showing all the rings and tickets from every Super Bowl.

I love that stuff.

I like the numbers too. but something like the rings and tickets makes a very nice addition to the entire package.

This ring page is really nice, and having worked two Super Bowl runs, I wish I would have thought of it, but I agree with Shotglass in that I come away wanting a little more. I think the rings would have run a little smaller and I would have loved another line of information to compare them by (number of diamonds, karets, weight, etc, cost or value?). And I think the smaller size would have helped it breath a little too, instead of feeling a little crammed like it is now. Still, killer idea and I wish I would have done it.

Oh yeah, and this page is utter crap.

ps - Carrie, it was Tacoma who did the page in question. Boudet said he got it all off of SuperBowl.com.

Man, is that going on your headstone?

Anyhoo, that ring page is dynamite. If that was the section's only Super Bowl preview page, that'd be an issue. But I assume they had a lot of pages, so that's a nice addition, the type of thing that looks better in a paper than on the Web.

Yeah, that would make that page. A giant, meaningless number.

I like the variety of designer tricks:

(1) Giant, meaningless number.

(2) Cliche headline.

(3) Too-small and too-hard-to-read reverse type.

And people wonder why circulation is dropping.
