Here's the thing: The act of immigrating is what's illegal. Once they're here, they're committing no crime at all simply by staying here. Even the act of getting here isn't technically a "crime."

There's a difference between actively courting racists, an angle Trump has been working harder than any other candidate, and being a racist. Trump is just being cynical and playing the people who make up the GOP "base" (primarily ignorant, uneducated white people) for the idiots they are.

Getting here illegally is a misdemeanor, or an administrative violation, akin to someone saying "****" on over-the-air television.

But simply being here, regardless of how you got here, is not illegal in any way, shape or form.
