"It was big news in Chicago that the Cubs had worked a deal to acquire Matt Garza from the Rays. But the Chicago Sun-Times had a bigger surprise for its readers this morning with this back page photo - of former Ray Joaquin Benoit (who recently signed with the Tigers).

Rays radio man Dave Wills, back home in Chicago for the week, passed it on this morning."

You've also learned you have to catch the bad hops. This was the cover, not some last-minute photo thrown at you to fill an inside page.

Any good baseball editor knows that's not Garza. Now, whether the designer selected the photo without consulting anybody, that's another issue. I'm guessing that's what happened.

I'm saying that is one of the big losses of the pared-down copy desks and the loss of experience that replacing veterans with rookies has meant.

It should have been caught by someone on the desk, at the very latest, by someone in the newsroom when the first edition was printed and distributed in the office. I haven't worked inside a newsroom for five years, but gosh, i hope the night crews still thumb through the paper after first edition.

I've made plenty (and, yes, Ace, as a "baseball editor," a "college editor," "fill in the sport" editor ... ), including a stupid one in a special section that Miami talk shows had a field day with.
I've also caught plenty more, just like this. Again, you're at a metro for a reason.
The standards and stakes are higher.
You guys have a relaxed, "Oh, well, what can you do, AP screwed us" attitude.
That wouldn't fly at the three metros I worked. At 1HP, they would have called my ass at 5:30 a.m. with questions I wouldn't want to answer. (Mile_High, you ever get any of those?? Lovely conversations.)
I'm sure it didn't fly in Chicago. Not saying somebody needs to be fired. Just saying somebody has to be accountable. It's not acceptable. It's not even close to being acceptable. One look at that photo and you know that's not Garza.
