The unfortunately-named Triumph is finally expected to be towed into port today. It has been adrift since an engine room fire Sunday with limited power, no a/c, insufficient food and more than 4000 passengers taking the idea of a poop deck a little too far.

Triumph is a very nice boat....

For me to poop on!

I just wanted to come on here and type starfishboard.

That is all.

I don't understand why the bathrooms aren't working or why there are lines for food.

The boat won't move. Does that mean it has to turn into 'Lord of the Flies'?

The power is out on much of the ship. They can't cook a lot of their food, so passengers are limited on where they can eat, instead of having a couple of places to choose from.

But couldn't you set up multiple, new distribution points for food?
And do the engines have to work for the toilets to work?

Both honest questions, I've never been on a cruise and know nothing them.

I have never been on a cruise, and I'm sure it's a lovely experience for most people, but at this point it seems like a fairly perilous situation. Between the unsolved murders, weird illnesses, potential involvement of Rosie O'Donnell, and now a floating Port-o-Potty scenario, I'm out.

The engines generate electricity.

I guess that makes sense. I was thinking 'My toilets don't need power,' but I hadn't thought about the pressure needed in the water system via pumps.

Not sure how the systems work, but every story you hear about a stranded cruise ship, one of the first things you hear is about the toilets overflowing with waste. Would not anyone I know to be stranded in that situation.

Different circumstances, but I've been without running water when traveling.
It's a drag. I certainly wouldn't want to go through it with 3,000 other people who were expecting to be pampered.
No pun intended.

I got stuck on a guy's sailboat without a working bathroom during a major boat parade where there was much beer consumed. Fortunately, we could just go in a cup and dump it over the side. But the females who came aboard weren't so fortunate. I also found out it is a big no-no to go No. 2 on someone else's boat without permission, apparently. I spent my first night on a former friend's boat and did my normal routine in the morning. He FREAKED THE **** OUT! And he was pissed at me for several days. Course, he is an asshole and we are no longer friends for similar subsequent run-ins.

When you say 'similar subsequent run-ins,' do mean feces-related?

Nope. Just general assholish-ness. But some related to the boat. He is the captain after all. What a douche.

I've only been sailing a few times, and never on an a trip of more than a few hours.
I would not have known about needing permission to sh#t on the board.

What if you're on a huge yacht, and the boat owner and the captain are not the same person. Do you ask the owner or the captain?

Also, I'm assuming this etiquette is not in play if you pay for the boat trip. If I pay for a sailing trip down the California coast, I don't have to ask to sh#t, right?

I'm guessing if you're on a large boat then you are free to sh#t to your hearts content. But on a boat this size (maybe 37 feet) the boat's toilet has to be hand pumped and doesn't have water in it. Kind of like a small RV toilet, I suppose. All I know is, dude went ape**** when he realized I had done it.
