Carl Peterson bashes Whitlock

They have a few members that received credentials to interview players, coaches, and in this case, Chiefs GM Carl Peterson:

DB: Your opinion of Jason Whitlock?

PETERSON: "You're going to write this down?"

DB: Absolutely!!!

(Peterson nods his head in disapproval and then opens his mouth to say something, followed by a 10 second pause... finally he speaks.)

PETERSON: "He doesn't know our players, he's never around. He can get paid to say a bunch of stuff but his stuff isn't accurate."

DB: He's like a shock-jock for a newspaper.

PETERSON: "Yes, yes!!!"

I don't know about you guys, but I think it is DEAD WRONG for this interviewer to bring up another member of the media. I know he's probably not a legit reporter, and that he's probably lacking some experience and knowledge about journalism ethics ... but is he out of whack?

I've met shock jocks, I know shock jocks, but Mr. Whitlock is no shock jock (unless you are on the other side of one of his pancake blocks ... then you can be shocked).

1. Is it OK for an actual member of the print media to ask this type of question in your opinion?
2. How do you respond to Carl's claim that you "don't know what's going on" and "never being around."

Why should Whitlock have to respond at all? I'm not defending him....lord knows he doesn't need me...but unless this becomes a national story, then there's nothing for him to respond too.

Conversely, reporters and columnists are accourntable also.

if the chiefs have a beef, let's get it out in the open.

having a byline or a coluimn doesn't make you anything but a guy with a byline or a column.

personally, i''d like to see more writers held accountable, but also the teams and players they cover.

accountabiility is everything is this business, whatever side of the ledger you're on. let's not forget that the teams, coaches, players, whatever, also hold us in question on many things, at many times.

if you do your job well, you won't be questioned. otherwise, you're as accountable as anyone else.

1. yes, i think it's ok. it's well-known in kc that i'm the rock in peterson's shoe. i irritate the hell out of the guy and provoke him to do dumb stuff. he has writers on the team's web site who make it a habit to bash me. the peterson-whitlock feud is quite a soap opera in kc.

2. never being around = been to every chiefs game for 12 years, have had great relationships with many of peterson's best players, can get most of his players on the phone whenever i want, never have had a problem getting one-on-ones with his head coaches, even the ones who hated me (marty) and don't have any problem getting peterson to do what i want, including coming to my house for a christmas party.... don't know what's going on = when readers start believing that they'll quit reading my column. i don't care what peterson says. i care about what he thinks. if i was as uninformed as he states, he wouldn't worry at all about what i write.

overall, carl peterson is my no. 1 earner. yes, from time to time he complains about my pimp hand, but he always brings daddy his money and lots of it.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but I fail to see how it applies in this case. Hell, a columnist would have to be on the payroll for a coach or owner of a pro team in town not to find something to be pissed about.

On message boards, when the loonies aren't ripping their team or the rival team they are ripping the local paper, especially the columnists.

Speaking of the pimp hand, Jason, how are things going with you getting the credentials back for the radio people in KC?

Remember when you were at the NBA Finals and were spouting off on here about the Glasses: "***** better have my money when I get back" to Kansas City, wasn't it? Did they have it?

Don't tell me you've given up on that crusade, or is it too much a blow to the ego that the big, bad columnist couldn't get the worst owner in pro sports to cave in ... or even sit down for a face-to-face?
