It's a weekly in central Alberta. It's been a couple years, but I did know someone that worked here (2003ish). I seem to recall that he was given a lot of leeway in what he wrote (he was a bit of a flake who used to pepper his municipal council coverage with pop culture references). His op-ed was just wacky.
Rodeo would be the big gig in the summer. It's Canada, so hockey, hockey and a little bit of hockey in the winter.

Sports Reporter/Photographer REF#: 8413
Stettler Independent
Location: Stettler, Alberta
Posted: March 1, 2007
Salary: Not Stated
Description
The Stettler Independent has an immediate opening for a sports reporter/photographer (full-time, permanent).
This office, based in Stettler, Alberta, also produces the Bashaw Star, Castor Advance and the weekender. The successful candidate will be the designated sports reporter for the Independent, filling 3-5 pages each week. He or she will also cover the County of Stettler for the Independent, and be the main reporter for the Bashaw Star, writing news and sports and covering community events. Supporting photography will be required for all publications.
We are a small community (population 5,600) with easy access to larger centres such as Red Deer, Camrose and Edmonton. Like most communities in Alberta, Stettler is booming and that growth is driven by the oil and gas industry. This position will give the reporter a chance to be a part of that growth, as well as tackle important environmental and development issues such as communities running out of water and the space to expand. Agriculture is the traditional livelihood of this area and is still an integral part of the economy, as is the growing tourism industry. There is a vibrant sports community, as well as a strong arts and culture presence through the Heartland Arts Troupe, two dance schools, and our annual music festival. In the sports world, we are home to several world and Canadian rodeo champions, a Heritage Junior B hockey team, peewee, bantam and high school football teams, with minor hockey, soccer, fastball, mixed martial arts, volleyball and slo-pitch thrown in for good measure.
We are owned by the Black Press Group Ltd. and offer excellent benefits and competitive wages.
