Boosters win one: FSU's Jeff Bowden resigns - effective end of season

Doing the right thing by stepping aside. He might not be the problem, but he's sure not helping.


TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Florida State offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden resigned Tuesday, just three days after the Seminoles were shut out for the first time in 233 games.
¶ His resignation will be effective at the end of this season, athletic director David Hart Jr. said.
¶ Bowden, the youngest son of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, replaced current Georgia coach Mark Richt as the Seminoles' offensive coordinator in 2001.
¶ Florida State (5-5, 3-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) has its homecoming game Saturday against Western Michigan followed by the season finale on Nov. 25 against rival Florida.
¶ Bobby Bowden has stood by his son's performance as offensive coordinator despite a notable decline in scoring and yardage gained in the past half dozen seasons.

Jeff did his old man a favor, which is too little too late, much to Bobby's displeasure of seeing his kid come under fire.

I'm speculating if Bobby would ask Terry to run the offense....

But it's an FSU rule. NCAA can't tell schools who they can or can't hire unless it involves probation

needed to be done, although for some reason bobby tried to talk him out of it. not sure why he can't admit the offense his son was running wasn't working, and it's BS that he would put his family relationship over his coaching responsibilities. that isn't doing justice to his job. one of them had to go, and maybe both do, no matter how much the elder has done for college football.

A friend who's a ticketholder said it was a state of Florida law for its employees. No idea if that's true.

It is a state law for government employees. Can't report directly to a family member.

Jeff Bowden had a one year contract that expired in Aug '07, yet was given a 5 yr deal.

Sounds like a player with a big contract who is released despite being owed a lot of money. Talk about what's wrong with athletics -- and at the college level too. What a disgrace.

it is sad, Jeff had a one year deal (all assistants at FSU have that) and was paid $140,000 or so.

that contract expires Aug '07. But the Boosters gave him a "severance" of over $500,000.

makes no sense, I can't find a single other case of anything like this happening on the college level.
