Are you kidding me?

Kansas fans may begin losing sleep over whether their coach is headed for Oklahoma State. Less than 12 hours after cutting down the nets, a bleary-eyed Self returned to the Alamodome on Tuesday morning and faced questions about whether he's interested in the job at his alma mater, which parted ways with Sean Sutton on April 1.

Pathetic. Day after they win it all, Kansas has to hear about this garbage.

Uh, been following sports (or any type of news, really) long?
That's the way it works.

And it's pathetic every time. The dude just signed an extension.

Re: Bill Selfish?

Ah, the Kansas Jayhawks, once again a victim of their own success ...

He signed an extension a year ago. The OSU job was not open at the time. There weren't rumors flying about ridiculous numbers then either.
Would you prefer the media ignored the issue that EVERYONE (including the Kansas faithful) wants to know about?

Could be worse. He could have dodged questions last week and made it obvious he was interested.

Or he could pull a Nick Saban or Roy Williams and dress down reporters for even asking about it, and then take the job anyway ...

Re: Bill Selfish?

1. Oklahoma State is Self's alma mater.

2. Oklahoma State is offering him a ****load of money.

3. If Kansas wants to keep him, they should meet or beat the offer.

4. A signed "contract extension" means nothing. Nothing.

5. At least Self didn't **** around looking for other jobs while he was still supposed to be coaching his current team (Hello Nick Saban!! Hello Larry Brown!! ;) ;) ).

6. If Self leaves, Kansas will get another good coach.

Uh, the media isn't the issue. The issue is that Bill Self is willing to jump to Oklahoma State for the money immediately after winning the title with Kansas and one year after signing an extension.

This will not happen. If T. Boone Pickens says he will put up the money to get Self, nobody will be able to match that.
It may not come down to money, but if it does, Kansas simply cannot win.

Then I apologize for arguing an entirely different point.
We still disagree, but at least now the disagreement makes more sense.

Re: Bill Selfish?

I know this is how it goes. Someone's successful, someone else comes after him and throws wads of $$$$ at him to try to get him to do there what he did at the other place.

Self's quotes make it sound like he's saying Kansas better give him an even better offer than they just did or he's leaving, success and never having to pay for another meal in Lawrence be damned.

So the question becomes, is Bill Self selfish if he does go to OKSU?

Re: Bill Selfish?

I'll take the best provision for my family over loyalty to my employer every time.
We live in a capitalist society. Self's market value just went up. That's the way it goes.

Re: Bill Selfish?

I think it is a reach to say Self is saying Kansas has to come up with a better offer. Maybe he just means a competitive one, or it is the length of the deal he is interested in.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with looking out for his own best interests as long as he isn't trying to dodge buyout clauses or steal recruits before he even changes jobs (see Rich Rodriguez).

Re: Bill Selfish?

The older I get, the more OK I feel about coaches taking the money and running. And I don't have kids.

I didn't get that from his quotes at all.

this national title assures he'll make more money at Kansas than he and the next three generations of Selfs could ever **** away. Sorry, while I agree with your general point, at some point it's just greed and gluttony and you (you being self, not HP) should be smart enough to realize you can spend the next 25 years at Kansas and still be the most beloved man in the state long after you start pushing daisies.

If he goes, I'll lose a ton of respect for him, not that he gives a **** what I think.

You really think he'll still be loved in that state if the Jayhawks are mediocre for a few seasons? A bunch of DI football and hoops coaches would stand in a long-ass line of people who disagree.
