You're confusing him with Dennis Miller.

No- Miller has talent.

Like most in his phylum. Not self-loathing like Jon Stewart, though.

I can't stand Maher, but Miller is equally untalented. I've tried to read some of his books, and not only is just about every single joke a pop-culture reference, and most of them don't even make sense. I can't remember any Miller work I've enjoyed.

Miller wasn't bad on Weekend Update, but in that format, other people were writing most of his jokes. His own material is smug and annoying.

Seen Miller live in the past year, thought he was funny as ever. His vocabulary and pull-a-hamstring-reaching-for-obscure-references schtick always gets me laughing, because it's in the same ballpark as a lot of us who write and try for that next metaphor or analogy. When he goes for some goofy (and even dated) Lorne Greene/Bonanza and his sons reference, I can hear past editors whacking it from my stories, and I celebrate that Miller doesn't have to cope with them.

Maher, to me, is just a sleazoid and a nihilist.
