Best sports songs

Listening to John Fogerty's "Centerfield" today. Just love that song. I figure it's got to be the best song there is about a sport. It just makes me want to grab a glove and go.

My second place would probably be Garth Brooks' "Rodeo."

"Glory Days" would be good, except only one verse is really about sports, and the "speedball" line is really dumb.

And Bruce was actually a pretty good little league player, supposedly an all-star one year when he was 11-12 -- he shoulda known it should have been "fastball."

I went to Carlton Fisk's induction to Cooperstown, and they ****ing played "Centerfield" on a loop for like two hours as we waited in the boiling sun on the big lawn for the ceremony to begin. Ruined that song for me.

I went to Carlton Fisk's induction to Cooperstown, and they ****ing played "Centerfield" on a loop for like two hours as we waited in the boiling sun on the big lawn for the ceremony to begin. Ruined that song for me.

"Centerfield" always seemed too synthy, drum machiney, too Eighties-ish to really hit home for me.

Like Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark," I think it would benefit terrifically from a live rearrangement that leans more on rockabilly guitar and less on synths and vacuum packed drum machines.

One year in the mid 80s I worked summer nights as a scorekeeper/ PA guy for a city rec men's league (college summer level) so I had to cook up some between innings mix tapes, so it was a challenge coming up with songs that wouldn't drive the crowd, the players and me nuts if you played them more than once or twice a night.

Funny, how few rock and country songs are about baseball.

So of course now there's a band that does nothing BUT songs about baseball. (Actually they've been semi-active since 2008.)



And The Baseball Project, featuring Peter Buck (and Mills and Berry sometimes) is the closest thing to an active musical group featuring any member(s) of R.E.M.

I'm sure if I was doing ballpark mixtapes now, I'd slip in a few of their songs.
