Never figured out why Melanie Safka didn't become a much bigger star ; she followed up "Lay Down" with "Brand New Key," a funny-sexy [but not too sexy] novelty song which did dent the charts, so I guess that made her a 1 1/2-hit wonder.

Stevie Nicks 6 years ahead of her time. For that matter I never figured out why Nicks and Fleetwood Mac didn't take a run at "Lay Down"; it would have been perfect for their style.

"purple Rain" has got to be one of the dreariest hit songs of my lifetime.
Hard for a non-depressive to shake their ass to this song and think, "Wow, this **** really makes me feel good."
