do you think these players will be in the hall of fame someday?

jim edmonds (many gold gloves)
greg vaughn (his 50 homer season was overshadow by big mac and sammy)
harold baines - he was a hit machine for 20 years
kenny lofton - closing in on top 10 all time in stolen bases
luis gonzalez (almost 40 and no signs of slowing down)
jeff conine (check his stats, you might be surprised. he had put togethe a nice career)

i'll post my list of pitchers later.

i see harold baines getting in someday. everyone ahead of him on career hits list is in, or will be. (not sure about raffy).

lofton is still going strong. if he retired now, no but 5 more good years and it will be a nobrainer.

when greg vaughn gets into the hall of fame, the hall of fame should close up shop for good.

vaughn is a career .242 hitter with 355 home runs.

anyone who thinks this qualifies him for the hall of fame, despite three monster seasons, knows nothing about baseball or misunderstands the concept of a hall of fame.

his three monster seasons came during the height of the steroid era but even if they hadn't, his numbers are not even close to meriting hall of fame recognition.

It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good.

How about Jim Thome? Should get 500 HR, but nowhere near 3000 hits.

My guess would be no.

No to those guys, unless Luis Gonzalez plays till he's 50.

But Jon Saraceno is a lock to make the writers/broadcasters wing.

Perhaps a town down the road from Cooperstown could establish a Hall of Very Good?

Damn, it seems like I'm always battling you for the low-hanging fruit. You won this round.

And a million times no on any of them. And on Blyleven.

No.

No.

No.

Lofton? Let me think about it. Five more years? Uh, no. He's 40 right now. so, no. And top 10 in stolen bases? He's 15th now and he needs 112 to tie Honus Wagner for 10th all time. It's hard to imagine he'll play long enough to do that, given that he hasn't stolen more than 32 since 1996. He is likely to reach 2,500 hits. That said, he's an asshole and if you're borderline that's a tough place to be for HOF votes. So, no.

No.

Baines would be the only one I would even think about, but he never got 3,000 hits and spent way to much time at DH.

Like buckweaver said, right next to the soccer hall of fame in Oneonta.

That's a definite NO to all of them.

I've always been more strict than most when it comes to the Hall of Fame. I think there are many players in it now who should not be in there, and there are others in the future who will get in who I don't think belong. Numbers have importance, but to me, not the most important thing to get into the HOF. I look at a player and ask myself, "Did this baseball transcend his era in baseball?" and "Is he one of the great players of all time?"

I have several who will get in who I don't think belong. And I'm prepared for a shellacking:

Frank Thomas
Craig Biggio
Manny Ramirez
Jim Thome

Yeah, what has Biggio done to get in? ::)

I agree with you on Biggio, Thome and Thomas ... the Hall of Very Good, indeed ...

But Manny ... he'll have the number (500 jacks), he's won a WS and has been a menace for a decade ... the last guy you want stepping in against you with the game on the line. He's not a transcendent guy like Bonds, but he's gotta be there.

As for the original list that started this thread, that level of player makes it in the football and basketball HOF, which is why Cooperstown is so cool.

And Luis Gonzales is showing no signs of slowing? What was that non-tender thing that happened last year in a town where he won a WS? Jamie Moyer isn't going in either. No to Steve Trachsel. Kirk Reuter's out, too.

I agree so much on Goose and Blyleven. Guys still talk about Blyleven's curve in hushed tones. Throw out the stats--which are good enough--and that should be the mark of a Hall of Famer.

The guy who gets me is still Gary Carter. I understand the arguments for him, and maybe I am tempered by the fact that I hated him as a player beyond anything you can imagine. But at best he is on the lower end of Hall of Famers.
