From Media Post: While other consumer magazine categories seem to be adrift, newspaper-distributed magazines are alive and kicking. Nashville's Athlon Sports Communications says it plans to launch a new newspaper-distributed magazine, Athlon Sports, this October. The new magazine will debut with a circulation of 7 million, which Athlon boasts will make it the largest sports magazine in the country.

From Loser: 7 million, my rear. Does Athlon have any talent? Can anyone name one writer? They say they'll do this with existing staff; does anyone think they can really pull this off successfully?

It's an interesting idea — downright fascinating — but Loser is even more skeptical about this than He is about the WSJ's New York edition.

The American Profile reference here catches my eye. It's certainly a below-the-radar publication, sorta third-string way behind Parade and USA Weekend, but still reaches a lot of homes.

Athlon uses free-lance content almost exclusively (and pays quite well, too). You couldn't swing a dead cat in a press box without hitting someone who's written for Athlon at one time or another.

And if you did swing a dead cat in a press box, well ... WTF kind of sick reference is that? Psycho.

Especially if the ice cream cooler was jammed, like it was in Hoover that one time.
You sure you don't mean the bathroom door in the auxiliary press box? (Hi GG!)

Read the writing credits in this fall's football magazine. Lots of beat writers, who know their teams.

Athlon has been a very dependable source of free-lance income for many people on this board. They pay fairly well, always on time, and the magazine has a solid reputation.

If this is another source of free-lance income for some, then the more the merrier, and the sooner the better.

Some slobby sports writer would probably grab it and eat it.

Especially if it was the only free food.

Flabby flaccid bags of rotting feline flesh, floating in a fetid bath of malodorous swill.
