The City of Keizer is taking heat for installing a group of cement posts designed to protect pedestrians from cars, but which some say is a phallic symbol.

The city is looking into retrofitting the posts with metal collars and chains that run between them, which they hope will change the look. If not, they said the posts will have to go.

I doubt there is a real purpose other than to prevent the posts from seeming to be too bland.

While it isn't a real stretch to call them phallic looking, these residents need to grow the hell up and get out of the third grade.

I would have to guess that having it round removes the issue of hard edges. If you turn it into a square, some kid could run trip and smack their head on the object's edge. That would not be a pretty site. The same would go for the top. You round it off so that there are no edges.

Adding the etching in the object prevents the unit from looking plain and boring. The etching goes in, instead of out, for the safety factor again. Having the hard edges jut out would be similar to having a flat top.

Of course, I could be completely wrong in this assessment and the designer could just be a guy or gal that really likes creating objects that look like a penis.

I understand the purpose of avoiding edges in the design. That's part of why the detail choice seems so strange.
It's going to be fairly phallic in design out of necessity. Why enhance that look?
