AP score center

Anybody had any dealings with them?

We had a call from them last night in NE Mississippi, where we had a couple of games, and the guy told me they're located in Seattle and are handling prep scores for 32 or 33 of the state bureaus this fall.

Oddly enough, they don't handle Washington.

They're generally pretty good to deal with. If you e-mail them the scores as you get them, saves for having to deal with their calls later on.

That said, I wish we could give AP a specific list of what schools we cover. Without fail, they ALWAYS call looking for scores we don't have and don't care about. Which is part of their job I guess, but not always real easy to deal with on Friday night deadlines.

And I thought they were in Spokane, not Seattle. Could be wrong on that.

I called AP, because they didn't send a ****ing Twins-White Sox lede, and I kind of needed it for the front page, and I swear I woke up whoever answered.

He said, "Let me find the light."

This was an 800-number call to god knows where. How the **** did I wake someone up?

man, the ap score center is the source of much hilarity.

like when they enlighten us with new ways to say the names of the local cities.

or when they call us for scores from games 5 hours away from us.

or when they have "a few games" they're looking for ... then proceed to rattle off 52 games.

or when they run "Podunk 28, TBA 0," which they did tonight

One of their guys sent me a list of schools they thought were handled by us and asked me to mark the schools we dealt with and give them suggestions as to who would cover the others. I send them a running e-mail on Friday nights with scores as we get them, so we get very few calls from them unless they have a conflict.

We've had similar problems with the AP score center. They ask for games not in the area, they get school names wrong, etc.

The worst part is, they also do the tabulating of the votes for the weekly prep football poll. Last year, they did a top 10 in each class, then in the Others Receiving Votes category, ranked those teams 11, 12, etc.

One of my layout people missed that the first week. One of our area teams was receiving votes, but not in the top 10. Some parent called up complaining that in one of our game stories we didn't say the school "was ranked 15th." It took me 10 minutes to explain they really weren't ranked, they were only getting votes.

The guy I dealt with was always pretty cool, plus he talked **** about one of our rival newspapers because they refused to send out city scores because they didn't want other papers in the state to get them.
I just e-mailed as the night went on and they didn't usually call us that often.

Last night was my first dealing with them. Didn't seem too bad, except they seemed baffled as to why I would be calling in scores of Louisiana teams from a paper in Mississippi -- even though our private schools organization has members in Louisiana -- and then politely declined to take the score.
And later they gave me the random phone call about five or six games that were nowhere near our area. That was a fun use of precious deadline minutes.

I agree with FCE.

Everyone on the desk seems to groan when the phone rings after deadline because we all know it's AP Score Center.

I actually enjoy picking up the phone and getting them to pronounce things incorrectly.

Our state association has an online scoreboard (http://scoreboard.12dt.com/scoreboard/khsaa/kyfb6) that coaches are required to call or get fined We never get a call from the AP Score Center unless the scoreboard doesn't have it.
